A rotating milk carton and the Hawthorne District ...

Since I'm such a sucker for roadside oddities, I couldn't help but take a shot of this...

The Sunshine Dairy Foods rotating milk carton on 801 NE 21st St.!

This rivals, no, surpasses in size and scope the rotating giant ice cream sandwich on top of the It's It building" in Burlingame, CA...

We also noticed that many of the older neighborhoods had their own local theatre, like how old Chula Vista used to have the Vogue Theatre (where we saw "Star Wars" back in 1977), or the old Loma Theatre (now a Book Star) in Point Loma. This cool Art Deco signage belongs to the Laurelhurst Theater in the Kerns neighborhood.

The Laurelhurst Theater is located on 2735 E. Burnside St.

I don't remember where this was, but it seemed to be a "gateway" type of entrance into one of the older communities. There were two flanking the street. It seemed to be such a formal entryway. The sign reminded me of the one in "Back to the Future" - "Lyon Estates".

We ended up in the Hawthorne District which has a lot of eclectic shops, restaurants and brewpubs. We did a bit of walking and browsing around. The area reminded me of Newport Ave in OB but nicer and a bit more upscale. The street had  a mix of everything, from headshops, shoes stores, clothing, Asian decor, and even a dollar store.

Mink is located on 3418 SE Hawthorne and is a cute boutique with a lot of unique pieces.

Again, another cool theater sign - The Bagdad Theater which opened in 1927. It served as the movie premiere site of Gus Van Sant's "My Own Private Idaho" in 1991. The theater is now part of the McMenamin's chain which refurbishes historic sites and turns them into hipstery brewpubs. As the exotic curving writing on the sign suggests, it is meant to have a Middle Eastern or Arabian flair.

The Bagdad Theater is located on 3702 SE Hawthorne.

I like that every city (it seems) has banners of the distinct neighborhoods...

One of the many Fred Meyer stores in Portland. This is kind of like a Wal-Mart type of store.

This location of Fred Meyers is located at 3805 SE Hawthorne.

If we weren't already full from lunch (and dessert), we would have tried this place, Tico's Costa Rican Fusion. I can honestly say we've never tried Costa Rica food. Looks like it was closed anyways (no, for sale).

Tico's Costa Rican Fusion Grill food cart is on 4707 SE Hawthorne. Not sure if this place even exists anymore since they had a "For Sale" sign.

And lastly, our final food stop would be on this same street. We went there before driving out to the airport...
