Green Acre Part 1 - The Garden

Last week I had the pleasure of having lunch with my awesome friends Dennis of A Radiused Corner and Cathy of mmm-yoso. Sadly, CAB of CAB Cooks was sick that day, so she was M.I.A. Hopefully she is doing much better so that we can meet up for a future lunch date.

Dennis had the honor of choosing the restaurant and we were only too happy to oblige for our meetup at Green Acre.

Man, I hadn't driven up here in years. Reminds me of when Bert was still in college at UCSD. I've never felt in my element in the La Jolla area...

It's pretty easy to get here. Take the 5 up to Genessee, hang a right on John Jay Hopkins (you will see the "Okeanos" sculpture (which looks like a GIANT PIECE OF $#iT, seriously) on the corner, and hang a right on General Atomics Way. You will see "Nautilus Three" on one of the buildings. You can park there, or if you go in the back, there are designated spaces for Green Acre. They are located below the restaurant's garden...

Cathy and I got here a bit early and had a chance to wander their garden before Dennis arrived. We loved all of the raised beds, each growing wonderful and fresh vegetables.

So many varieties...

There was even a nice seating area...

Lettuces and what looks to be a grid for a vine vegetable.

Fresh peas...

Gorgeous isn't it?

I wish I had all of this in my back yard, but with the addition of Filipino vegetables like batao (broad beans), patola (ridged loofah), ampalaya (bittermelon), opo (loofah gourd), talong (eggplant), tanglad (lemongrass), and kinchay (Chinese celery). Wait, that's what my parents' back yard is for! But really, this was awesome to see such a bountiful selection of greens, which of course, they use in the restaurant.

Loved seeing the radishes...

and the rows of red and yellow chard...

Before heading up to the entrance, we noticed this area devoted to herbs...

Up next, our lunch...

Wow, you took many great pics! I'd imagine the garden is mostly 'for show' but even so I think it creates a relaxing environment. Thanks for driving out this way.

hi dennis, thanks! the garden is really used. Cathy noticed how some of the lettuces looks like they got picked over (for the younger leaves)...I saw a lot of those leaves in my salad too.

I just got around to downloading my photos (along with 800 others)(go figure) and really want to go back. Yours are wonderful and a good point of view of what is there. The fresh vegetables and herbs really were noticeable in the salad I had.
