Not. Yeesh, points off for that craptastic Capt. America.
My visit to Target yesterday was specifically in search for something that is quite similar to an "illegal" food item...
Kinder Egg = Bad for Dumb Americans
According to an article I read about this new development (link at end of this post),
"This is a big deal, because this type of product hasn't been legal in this country since 1938, when the FDA passed the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, which prohibits an "Non-nutritive component" (for example, a toy) from being embedded in a confectionary product..."
Really? Haven't they heard of King Cakes or those Rosca de Reyes cakes? The plastic baby can choke you just as well as a "toy" in a plastic egg. I can also think of some other "non-nutritive" crap they put in food. Anyways, I digress..
Well, silly Americans (myself included), we now have the "Choco Treasure" egg. Only $1 at your local Target ($5 for 5!). There were seven boxes left but one was EMPTY (WTH!) and the other had an opened egg where someone ATE HALF of it and left the plastic capsule inside. Nice. Really nice.

I made sure all my boxes had intact and foil-wrapped eggs...

Bert was excited to see "Iron Fist" (yellow headband) and "Nova" (with the red "star" on his helmet). He was dismayed to see Spiderman on motorcyle. "Why do they feel the need to do THAT?!!!".

Bert says that Iron Fist is a martial arts expert and is descended from the mystical hidden city, "K'un-L'un". His specialty is "summoning his chi into his fist so he can punch into things that normal people could not, therefore his moniker, "Iron Fist".
That's verbatim people. I love my husband's geekiness.
I only recognized Spiderman and Venom (hangs head in shame).

(cracked because I dropped the box in the store)
I believe the creator of this candy got away with not having the toy product completely enclosed. The two halves of the chocolate egg don't quite touch. There is a seam showing a ridge from the enclosed egg shaped capsule, so if a (stupid) kid tried to bite into this, he or she would also bite into the plastic and not swallow it whole. Unless they have the jaws of a python.

I'm glad this was only a $1. The chocolate wasn't that great but that was to be expected. Not like that high 'n mighty artisanal one from Pix Patisserie in Portland going for $4.75 a pop. Yes, it had better chocolate but I still feel that was way overpriced. I mean, kids don't care if the chocolate is Valhrona or Guittard.

There it is...

Pay no attention to Bert's dry skin. Wow, you can really see those fingerprint patterns, eh.
Spidey it is!

So cute!

When we were in Canada last year, we made a last frantic stop at the Wal-Mart in North Bay before heading back to Manitoulin Island with my friend C and her family. It was there that I stocked up on Canadian snacks (chips, candy, chocolate, and more chips) as well as an extra suitcase. Anyhow, my friend convinced me to buy some Kinder Eggs and let's just say that a few of them made their way to uh, San Diego. I'm glad that my suitcase wasn't searched thoroughly. The fine for having those eggs is pretty steep.
Now Bert is excited to see the other toys in the other as yet, unopened eggs.
Might have to go to Target again, ha ha.

I brought a Kinder Egg back from Germany. Didn't realize they were illegal until I Googled them to find out more info. Good thing I wasn't caught!
hi wc- yeah, good thing I wasn' caught either, I had 2 packs of 3!!!! yikes!
Oh how interesting on the US version. The toy is so cute. I still think it's crazy how they are illegal.
Hi kirbie, bert was excited that the toys were Marvel. The 2nd one we opened had Iron Fist (the one he really wanted), and the 3rd one had a (duddy) puzzle of Spider Man.
There's a European delicatessen near UCSD that sells Kinder eggs and I used to get them all the time when I went to school there. Never knew it was illegal in the US!
Hello NWF! Thanks for stopping by! I wonder if that European deli is still selling those Kinder Eggs! I never knew it was illegal until my friend told me. What a stupid law!
