Win Fook

*This restaurant is now CLOSED

We had a great time exploring the tiled staircases of the Inner Sunset and now it was time to grab some lunch...Instead of going back on Noriega which was pretty busy, we headed down Judah and then cut across. So much better since there was hardly any traffic.

This was our original lunch destination, the literally named "Pizza Place on Noriega".

but alas, it was not to be...

The Pizza Place didn't open until 12 noon and we were not only hungry but in dire need of a bathroom, so Win Fook across the street it was!

Unfortunately, since our visit ten months ago, this restaurant (a mainstay since 2006) has been closed.

Dim sum for lunch sounded good. We ordered a bunch of items and figured any leftovers would be enjoyed later that evening. (Update - a small note: the dim sum service was not from a cart, but rather, ordered off the menu and made to order)

Win Fook wasn't very large but kind of a long restaurant. It was busy by the time we left. One of the yelp reviews disparaged this place because of the decor. Really now? I don't eat somewhere based on the decor. You're not going to get an Ikea or hipster vibe from a mom and pop Chinese place.

We knew nothing about this place and were willing to give it a try. Plus an action flick was on!
Their menu items:

Pork dumplings (sorry I don't remember the actual name of these, maybe shu mai?):

Fried dumplings filed with chive and shrimp:

Shrimp stuffed bell peppers with black bean sauce:

The pork and chive dumpling innards:

Eggplant stuffed with shrimp (same sauce as the green pepper dim sum):

Won ton soup since Bert was craving something soupy; he felt ill from the other night which was MFS's wedding reception. It tasted pretty standard to me.

Bites from our dim sum lunch...

Orange chicken with broccoli which TC mostly had. I wasn't a fan of this preparation but since I didn't eat it, it didn't matter...

I believe chicken was in these noodle wraps. Sorry, I don't remember what these were called as well.

Our spread which yielded quite a bit of leftovers...

Of all of the items we ordered that day, my favorites were the pan fried dumpling with chive and shrimp and the stuffed eggplant and green peppers.

All this food was about $31. Not bad, eh.

We're not Chinese food aficionados but we felt the portions were fair, the food was tasty, and we felt satisfied when we left. We were glad that we went here instead of settling for pizza. If you look at the left half, you can see the turquoise building with the cool mural; it's the surf shop next to Devil's Teeth Baking Co. where we had breakfast earlier that day.

There was no website, but here are the yelp reviews which date from 2006 up to April of 2015 in which it was reported "closed". Well, I supposed a lot can happen in ten months.

Next up was dessert...to a place we hadn't been in about three years...

I love the receipt-it is art! When we go to Yum Cha, almost always the eggplant stuffed with shrimp and chive dumplings are regularly ordered. Too bad this closed...tablecloths and good prices are so difficult to find, much less in combination.

I just had to take a photo of that receipt! Whatever it said, it looked good! I was bummed that this place along with John's Ocean Beach Cafe, another place we like over in Parkside (Outer Sunset) is closed.

The first item is indeed shu mai. They look nice and plump too here. Were all these items made to order (vs pushed around in cart)? It's sad this place closed down - the prices on the dim sum items looked fair.

Thank you for confirming/clarifying Faye. These were made to order. There was no cart service. We ordered from a menu. I should probably indicate that in the post, but well, they're closed now so I don't know if it matters at this point.

Glad you thought the prices were fair. I hardly ever eat dim sum so I don't know what is a good deal or not. I figured this was pretty decent though. :)
