Making my own iced mocha cold brew

Cold brew seems to be a big thing nowadays...

So much that you can now find concentrate at your local grocery store...

Fire! More holiday art and yay, I finally made it - Finnish pannukakku

Earlier this morning before heading on the 805 North from H Street, I saw a thick black plume of smoke in the distance...

You don't see it anymore in the photo above since it was taken about an hour and a half later...

Mushroom trio & lemon pasta

Did you know that these very same mushrooms you can get for cheap at Zion...

are $5.99 at Sprouts? WTF!

Save some moolah and head over to Zion...

Seafood Friday #7 - Classic Old Bay Crab Cakes

Alas, this is the last Seafood Friday for this year since Easter is this weekend.

I recently picked up a couple of packets of Old Bay crab cake seasoning packets (only $1.50!) from I don't remember where...

Soup Three Ways

Bert has been sick for one week. He has a cough that just won't go away. To help combat his cold, we went out for some soup at Pho Convoy in Chula Vista...

This week we had soup at a couple of places plus some homemade Filipino comfort food...

Pork Ribs Sinigang with Guavas

With the colder weather coming on, that means it's time for me to make Filipino comfort foods...

in the form of sinigang, a soup that usess souring agent like tamarind, lemons, starfruit (which is hard to find here), or in this case, guavas!

These lovely guavas, obtained for free at my godbro's house, were so fragrant and ripe and I was dying to use them in a soup...

Maple Syrup pie once again...

Last night, TC helped me make our second Canadian Maple Syrup Pie...

I wish I could bottle the smell as it came out of the oven...

Vietnamese Pork Chops

This next recipe I'm making for the pre-Teens' birthday party is one that I've made quite a few times in the past but never blogged it...

I first saw the recipe seven years ago from a Hawaiian based blog that was on Kirk's sidebar (you can even see the comment I made back in '06). It's pretty easy to make and is usually a crowd pleaser...

Apple Slaw

The other recipe that I saw at the doctor's office involved Bert's favorite fruit, the Granny Smith apple...

The long list of ingredients was a bit daunting and the prep work a bit tedious, but I had most of the ingredients and thought I'd give it a go...

Corn Pudding

When I was at the doctor's office last week, I was passing the time looking at a magazine when a couple of recipes caught my attention. This was one of them...

I took a photo of the page, then handwrote it later at home so I could tape it to my cabinet near the stove. Yeah, very high tech, I know...

This would be one of the "new" recipes I'm trying for today's family gathering...

Canadian Maple Syrup Pie

This weekend I was in a pie baking mood...

It was finally time to open up the hallowed can of maple syrup that I got as a gift last year...

Rainbow cupcakes

While the Brown Sugar Pie was baking, TC started up on another recipe...

She liked the rainbow cupcake we had at Love Cupcake Cafe so she thought she would try making her own...

Brown Sugar Pie

A few days ago, we finally decided to make us to the red fluted pie plate I got as an Xmas gift...

The fluted edges make it a snap to have a relatively easy crimped edge with minimal effort. Now, that's what a lazy baker like me likes...

There was a newspaper clipping on Southern pies that I saved and this was the easiest one to do...

Pancit time!

A few days ago, I felt like making pancit bihon...

When we were in Seafood City, we bumped into a friend who saw my basket full of pancit ingredients. She asked, "What's the occasion?" to which I replied, "None! I just feel like making it!", which was true...

Deconstructed Krab wraps

I know the title of the post sounda rather boring, unimaginative, and maybe even unappetizing,

but this wanna be chirashi sushi (made with that fake Krab stuff) still came out pretty damn good...

It's so easy, you don't really need a recipe but...

Pastries, bolillos & Honey Shrimp

Earlier today I was in the area doing errands and thought I'd stop by to get a few breakfast pastries...

It's nice going in the morning because everything is fully stocked, very fresh, and smells so good...

I ended up having to go here again later that day...

Fart Food - Roasted Brussel Sprouts

OMG, this is the BEST video ever...

It's everything you wanted to know about why brussel sprouts make your farts smell so horridly! Let's not try to pretend we're all genteel and don't fart! This is educational and should be shared, ha ha!

If you would like to test this out, please feel free to try out this simple recipe for research...

Pork 'n Skrimps + Mother's Day Dinner

Pork and what?

Skrimps, or shall I say, Bagoong alamang, aka "salted shrimp fry"...

A most "fragrant" addition to any Filipino meal...
