Coupon Fail and Fatte's Pizza

This weekend, we tried to used our La Querencia coupon...

but the parking totally sucked. It's on a busy stretch of Broadway in west Chula Vista. Their lot only holds four cars and street parking was full, so...

we drove up a bit and made a U-turn. Off we went to find another spot for lunch.

Suzie's Farm Stand

This past weekend, Bert and I killed some time while TC was in class. We headed south on Saturn Blvd in the neighborhood of Nestor, which borders Imperial Beach. Egger Ranch (seen below) is a horse ranch.

The Egger family is really big in I.B. There is a park named after the Eggers and they own (and used to own) huge tracts of land here. I believe there's even a section of San Diego (down here) that's called the "Egger Highlands". But we weren't here to see the horses...

Ba Ren for the last time

Ever since I read Kirk's post on Ba Ren closing at the end of February, we knew we had to make one last stop...

to taste once again our favorite Hot Pepper Prawns dish...

Fun 4 All

Last weekend  TC wanted to go miniature golfing. For those of you that grew up in the South Bay, then this sign should be very familiar to you, even if you've never been here before...

(Actually this is a "new" sign - the original Fun 4 All sign was red and just said "Fun 4 All" in bold letters and had no dorky drawingss on it like this one!)

Yes, it's the ghetto fabulous Fun 4 All located on the side of the 5 freeway between J and L Street...

Mall eats...

So after our movie, the girls went to buy their lunches. TC at Panda Express and her friend at Subway. I, on the other hand saw this new (to me) eatery...

complete with an exposed oven....

"The Secret World of Arrietty"

This past weekend, I took TC and her friend (the younger neighbor girl) to see the new Studio Ghibli film, "The Secret World of Arrietty"...

This was the Japanese remake of Mary Norton's classic children's book, "The Borrowers" which was first published in 1952 and later made into a made for TV movie in 1973 (which I vaguely remember)...

Pozole

A few days ago, I had my hair cut (it's been two months and was getting too shaggy)...

Before I went home, my hairstylist gave me some of her homemade Pozole (pork and hominy soup)!

Jer's Handmade Chocolates

A few weeks ago, one of my friends and colleagues gave me my belated Christmas gifts. This was one of the boxes of chocolate he gave me

He tried sending it to me the last day before the Winter Break but I was out of the office that day since Bert and I took the day off to accompany TC's field trip to the Museum of Tolerance. Then in early January, one of his student aides tried to drop it off again but I was out of the office. The student refused to give it to my office mate next door who assured him she would give it to me...

This won't even last 'til breakfast...

I had the privilege of having lunch today with Kirbie of Kirbie's Cravings (post to be forthcoming)...

We'd been meaning to meet earlier this year to exchange belated holiday gifts, among them, several pastries from the new Hacienda Heights location of 85C!

or TC's Pink Lemonade?

Easy dinner...

Since our Valentine's dinner with the lobster ravioli was such a success, I repeated it with two other items also from Costco...

We'd never tried the Roasted Chicken and Mozzarella ravioli or that jarred pesto sauce before (OMG, pasta sauce for days)...

Boil up the pasta. Heat up the sauce. Spoon it on top, or if you want, plate the ravioli on top of the sauce. Whatever you want. Serve with salad and another small side if you wish. Instant dinner. Well, not instant like snap your fingers and it's done, but with minimal effort (boiling water, draining the pasta and heating up the sauce in a small saucepan), it's pretty simple.

The pasta was a hit with both TC and Bert. TC liked it better with the leftover tomato based Vodka cream sauce so she had that instead of the pesto. The pesto had a lot of flavor going on (garlic! basil!) but I didn't really like how oily it was. We liked the shape of the ravioli and the filling was quite tasty. Lots of chicken in there - substantial pieces, not ground up chicken.

Since we have a lot of leftover sauce, I plan to get more ravioli at good ole' Costco this weekend! More of both - the ravioli and the chicken!

Jollibee - Seafood City food court

Yesterday TC and I had to run a few errands, one of which took us to Seafood City...

Since it would be awhile before coming home and having dinner, I let TC have a small "snack" at Jollibee's..

They have what they call "Little Big Bites" for only 99 cents. There are two varieties: Spam and Corned Beef. Although TC likes both, she got the one with Corned Beef...

The pan del sal was pretty soft on the outside, but toasted on the inside. I'm not sure if that was cheese in there, as I only had a tiny bite to sample and didn't get any of it. There was more bun than meat. It was still a satisfying snack for TC. We needed to get a few vegetables for a few dishes this weekend. When we checked the seafood section, the live crabs weren't there. TC wanted to poke at them with the tongs. There's usually an old Lola or auntie whacking the crabs  and testing their feistiness in order to get the best ones. Next time, haha!

Odds 'n endz again...

A few odds 'n endz that I'm trying to unload from my camera:

Last month, we met up with a friend at the Bento on East H Street

I tried one of their new lunch specials - the Chow Fun Noodles with Beef (Chinese food in a Japanese place?)....

Lunch specials at Mea Kwan

Last week a few friends and I went to Mea Kwan for lunch...

As you can see, their counter was decked out for Valentine's Day...

Surprise from Croom's

A few days ago, I noticed that part of the old Carrow's (formerly Bob's Big Boy back in the day), on the corner of Broadway and H looked like it was knocked down.  It looks like it's set to be demolished. Wut?

It was going to be a new Red Lobster. I wonder if they are going to close the older one on F and Third Avenue?

In any case...when I got home later that day, Bert surprised us with two containers of food from Croom's, which is just a few steps away from this Carrows. Apparently, he was also in the area because of work related issues and decided to pick up some dinner using his Groupon for Crooms>

Left container:
Bbq sauce, corn bread, Tri-Tip
Sides: Candied Yams, and Baked Beans

Right container:
Corn bread, 1/2 chicken w/bbq sauce with 2 beef ribs (kind of hidden)
Sides: Collard greens and Mac 'n cheese

I only had the sauced tri-tip with the beans and collards.  The beans were okay, nothing special. The collards don't measure up to the one we had at Merritt's in Oakland and Coop's in Lemon Grove. TC didn't really like the mac 'n cheese. The ribs were nice and saucy. I'm not sure if they have a smoker or not, but it was pretty good.

I hadn't been to Croom's in nearly three years. One of my friends had her son's birthday party catered from here. It was a cool combination of soul food with Filipino food. From what I recall and from Bert's recent experience, it was a mom and pop operation. Very very friendly people who work there. Super nice. They can get kind of pricy but it was a good thing Bert had the Groupon - $15 for $30.

Return to Village House Kalina

After getting that humongoloid tray of baklava from King of Nablus Sweets, we headed over to La mesa where we had dinner here...

D never had Ukrainian/Russian food before and I definitely wanted to try the stroganoff this time...

Coronation Chicken

One recipe that I forgot to post earlier was one that was inspired by Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953...

(cue the music, "Hail Brittania")

I first had my first taste of Coronation Chicken at Shakespeare's Corner Tea Shoppe during tea with my daughter and the neighbor girls...

KD's Birthday Tea Party...

At last, the big reveal...

Diamond sugar crystals from Extraordinary Desserts in Little Italy. I dug up an old green floral silk placemat set I hadn't used in years (Pier 1). We had to use our red Christmas tablecloth as well. I thought it looked festive. You can also see the HP Sauce bottle (we tried that with the sausage rolls) and the Branston Pickle (before I moved it to the other room). The beautiful assorted platter of baklava in the middle was from King of Nablus Sweets. Man, D and I had a fun time that night gathering all of the sweets. The lovely tea set is courtesy of TORC...

Guess who got the cup with the flowers inside?

Tea Party preview food - The condiments and accompaniments

During the winter break, TC and I had fun scouring the local British food shops for the KD's upcoming tea party birthday. Although we didn't use this tea (seen below), I bought it for future us. It smelled so good!

I don't really like traditional tasting tea, but if it's fruity, I will drink it! This wasn't all there was either...

Tea Party preview food - Pigs in a Blanket

Here's another no brainer recipe, which utilized the labor of a certain 11 year old...

Pigs in a Blanket

Ingredients:
2 packages of mini cocktail sausages (I hate using the word 'wieners')
2 tubes of Pillsbury crescent dough

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375 F.
Open the crescent dough tubes
Lay out the crescent dough and cut the triangles lengthwise into three narrow triangles
Place one mini sausage on the shortest side of the triangle and roll it up.
Repeat until you've run out of dough and/or sausages
Place point side down on baking sheet
Bake 12 - 15 minutes or until golden brown
Serve warm
Woo-eey, lookit them thar weenerz!

We used two different kinds from Fresh and Easy - the Sweet and Smoky Pork (the darker more reddish sausage)and the Chicken Apple sausages. I preferred the pork ones over the chicken.  Ooh, fancy doily there!

Yes, we went all out for KD's birthday tea party. It was so fun planning this with TORC and D!

Tea Party preview food - Sausage Rolls

Here's another item I've never made before, English Sausage Rolls.

The recipes I saw online looked easy enough. Of course, I chose the easiest one, this one was from AllRecipes.Com,
"Mark's English Sausage Rolls"

Ingredients:
1 lb of pork sausage (I got mine from Fresh and Easy but forgot the brand. All I know is that it was NOT Jimmy Dean's, but I wanted it but it wasn't there)
Puff Pastry Sheets (I bought a pack of 10 squares from Vine Ripe Market; the recipe calls for "12" squares)
1/4 cup dijon mustard (I used Colman's instead, which isn't Dijon)
1 beaten egg

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
Divide the sausage into ten logs
Brush the squares with the mustard
Roll up the squares with the meat log (ha ha)
Seal with beaten egg
Place on ungreased baking sheet
Bake for 20 minutes or until puffed and golden brown (I did mine a few minutes longer to make sure the pork was cooked within)

Below was half of the rolls. In retrospect, I should have cut them in half because one piece was already pretty substantial. These also came out pretty good for a first try...

The one in the front was cut open when I first checked to see if one was done. I had to put it back int he oven for a few extra minutes to make sure the pork was cooked. For the tea, this was to be served with Branston pickle (which will be featured in a few posts from now).

I love using premade puff pastry sheets. It makes baking strudels, meat pies, or sausage rolls so much easier!

Tea Party preview food - Deviled Eggs

Behold, my first attempt at making deviled eggs.

These were one of the appetizers served for KD's birthday tea party a few weeks ago. They look pretty good!

Making these were made so much simpler with pre-boiled eggs from Costco (2 dozen for $3.49).

I looked up a bunch of different recipes and while they were pretty much the same, I noted a few variations and added my own twist. I didn't use up the whole two dozen eggs either. I kind of eyeballed the ingredients...

Deviled Eggs

Ingredients
18 boiled eggs
mayo
sweet pickle relish
Colman's mustard (it's a British brand and it has a kick to it)
salt
pepper
smoked paprika
chives

Directions:
Cut the eggs in half, lengthwise
Pop out the yolks
Put all the yolks in a bowl
Add the mayo - I started with 1/4 cup and then added more as needed
Add a few teaspoons of mustard
Add salt and pepper to taste
Add a few squirts (haha) of the sweet pickle relish
Mash the yolks in the bowl with a fork

Here's where I had help.

D was over early for the party to help set up and arrange the food. While I was a whirling dervish in the kitchen preparing a few other appetizers, D was "involuntarily recruited"  to spoon the yolk filling into the halved egg whites, which she did with panache and painstaking attention to detail. The filling was then topped with a pink of smoked Spanish paprika and a sprinkle of handsnipped chives. So, I have her to thank for the lovely presentation and execution of the deviled eggs.

I hope to make this again!
