October has come and gone...

California Center for the Arts - "Art Illustrated: Celebrating Comic Arts" exhibit
Our next stop was the California Center for the Arts...
which is a huge complex designed to showcase dance, art, and music as well as offer cultural enrichment through museums and various educational programs...
The exhibit we wanted to see precedes Comic Con by about a month or so. I'm a sucker for these kinds of exhibits so off we went to learn more about Comic Art...

SF Road Trip - Day 2 - Mel's Drive In & the Cartoon Art Museum
The restaurant near Thane's place...Delancy Streeet...Unfortunately I am having trouble posting hyperlinks, so this post won't have any links for extra info...FYI - This restaurant is well known for providing jobs to former addicts/homeless so that they can learn valuable job skills. Quite admirable. During our vacay, I asked Thane if he had ever eaten here. His answer was negatory but he ate there about a week later and said the food was pretty good, the prices decent (most of their stuff hovers around the $6 - $10 range, with a few items topping out at $12.95) but it was strange being in a restaurant with an all male staff.
Francisco_Municipal_Railway - aka the MUNI. I loved the font on this sign...This is SF's light rail system. We took the MUNI to get to downtown. Thane had a place in mind for brunch...

The "Almost Brunch" at Farmer Brown. Those fuckers were "booked" but I saw a lot of empty tables. Apparently, this is a popular place and you need reservations. More about this place here. Anyways...we left and headed for another place closer to the Cartoon Art Museum...
This was some comic/toy store next to our breakfast destination...Yes, do you see the Edward and Bella dolls? I know I'm obsessed about "Twilight" but not that obsessed to own the little toys. 
A few steps up was Mel's Drive Inon Mission Street. I know this is a chain, but it's a Bay Area chain that we just had to try since we were there. The last time Bert and I were at a Mel's was back in the mid 90's when we first visited Thane when he was doing his doctorate at Cal. I think it was a different location though. I noticed some of the side booths in this place had mini juke boxes. We were given a regular table which was right by the window - perfect for people watching...
It was mega crowded but we were able to get seated right away - lucky us. Hey, do you like my "face obscuring" skills? Bert taught me to use this little "spray paint" function to block faces instead of those censor bars I've been using in past posts...Fun! Now I won't feel so bad about posting other people since their faces are painted over now!
The food they have here is normal diner type American food. They also serve breakfast all day here so we decided to have breakfasty items.
Thane's shake - I want to say it was some sort of coffee concoction but I'm too lazy to get up and look at my fruity notebook for my chicken scratchy notes...
TC's Silver Dollar Pancakes...Check out some of the drawings on her placemat. The one on the far left is supposed to be Sandy the Squirrel on Spongebob. The Mickey Mouse was drawn by Bert. I did the crude drawing of the little girl with bugged out eyes. Partially hidden is a drawing of Plankton, the archenemy of Mr. Crab's from Spongebob (you can see Plankton's antenna).
Thane's plate - the Corned Beef Hash with scrambled eggs and hash browns:
My French Toast with one scrambled egg and 2 slices of bacon, which I gave to TC because I'm generous like that. I ended up scavving Thane's sour dough toast slices (as seen in this same photo).
Bert's Corned Beef Hash with scrambled eggs and pan fried potatoes...You know I've only had corned beef NOT OUT OF A CAN about two or three times. C'mon, I'm Filipino. We only know the canned, artery clogging, fat encrusted kind where you have a bitch of a time opening the can, but it's worth it once you do. I made corned beef with potatoes, peas, and tomatoes once when we had friends over. Lotus never had corned beef from a can and was surprised that I never had non-canned corned beef! Worlds collide...
What the hell - I posted another pic of TC's pancakes? Anyways, here it is again, but from a different angle. Wait, I rotated the plate...She wasn't able to finish them all (I didn't expect her to), but she liked the fact that the pancakes were small and not those giant ass ones that cover your whole plate.

As you can tell, we are huge fans of pop culture and try to visit at least one or two or more spots in every city we visit. Fuck the touristy places. We enjoy these kinds of places much more than your standard arts museum. 
This is part of a project called Hearts of San Francisco which began in 2004. Local artists were tapped to paint these giant hearts scattered throughout the city. New ones are created every year. This one was in the lobby of the Cartoon Art Museum. As you can see, the subject matter refers to the hot topic of Gay marriage. You can see a groom/groom and a bride/bride couple and although the image is cut off, there's someone in a helicopter saying, "We love you Gavin!" (in reference to former SF Mayor Gavin Newsom, who approved the gay marriage measure before it was, unfortunately, overturned by Prop 8 last November).
Love my purple spray painted face? I'm having fun with the "spray paint" function, ha ha. Dude, the 80's are back with a vengeance! (photo, courtesy of Thane).
All in all, a very cool place. We spent about maybe and hour and a half there. Sorry there are no photos from the interior since photography wasn't allowed. When I was still pregnant with TC in early 2000, Bert and I were here. He took a photo of me behind a life size replica of Lucy's psychiatric help booth - "The Doctor is in", since there was a Peanuts retrospective at the time. The exhibits during this recent visit included a retrospective on the "Watchmen", the "Brinkley Girls", the 25th anniversary of Stan Sakai's "Usagi Yojimbo" and a variety of cels from various pop culture icons (Captain Crunch, Fat Albert, The Beatles 'Yellow Submarine', a few Disney things (ugh), Woody Woodpecker (Hannah Barbera), Jonny Quest, the Avengers, Daffy Duck (Warner Brothers), and more...This place was the SHIT!
