Charley's Famous Burgers
Now this was a place I've been wanted to go to forever. It was a beautiful and sunny not like the day before which was Black Friday. What a nice change up this was.
Before heading home from our errands that took us out to the La Mesa area (I had to stock up on my puff pastry squares from Vine Ripe), we made the trip out to Lemon Grove...
since it was on our way down...Bert's interest was piqued when I mentioned Charley's Famous Burgers. TC, of course, is always interested in burgers, except for the gourmet kind. No, these were nothing of the sort....

BBQ Crawl - Stop 2: Barnes BBQ
The second stop of the Crawl took us a few miles away near the corner of Broadway and Lemon Grove...

BBQ Crawl - Stop 1: Coop's West Texas BBQ
Hey now...(say in a Howard Stern voice)!
Several SD Foodbloggers met up today for a BBQ Crawl, organized by the awesome C of CAB Cooks. Joining the group were myself, Dennis from Radiused Corner, Mary (and BF Jake) from Foodies: A SoCal Food Blog, Marie (and husband Dan) from Meandering Eats, Leanne (and husband Travis) from Three Dog Kitchen, and Kirbie (and her FH "future husband") from Kirbie's Cravings. A few other folks weren'table to make it, but hopefully for the next themed crawl they will...
First stop was a fairly new bbq place, Coop's West Texas BBQ in Lemon Grove, which opened up last year in the old Barnes BBQ location (the new location of Barnes was Stop 2 of the Crawl). I've seen the coupons in the SD Reader and it was recently reviewed (link at the end of this post). One of the criteria of the crawl was that the place had to have a smoker which Coop's had (using red or white oak chips).

Taste of Polynesia
Right off the 94 and College where it turns into Federal is this strip mall (see sign below):
This was our next stop. From Soul Food to Samoan Food at Taste of Polynesia.
It's a combination mini-grocery store and sit down eatery. It's not fancy or anything so don't expect china plates, real silverware and linen napkins. This is down home Islander food folks.
The young lady working there was really cool and showed us everything in the steam trays. She didn't even mind me taking photos (I asked politely if I could) and said, "Do whatever you need to do!"! Love it! These were Pork Sausage links and Corned Beef.
These were Turkey Tails and Lamb Ribs.
The one exposed tray had what they call "Sapasui" ("chopsuey"); it was kind of like pancit but with chapchae like noodles. It had slivered carrots and cabbage along with chicken flavored with soy sauce. I liked it but it was a bit too salty for me. TC enjoyed it later for dinner.
These were steamed taro, a staple in Samoan food. Other items in the trays included shoyu chicken, pork chops, fish, and curry chicken.
Fresh bananas and taros were along the back wall.
The girl working there was really patient as she explained Samoan cuisine to us.
I liked the bilingual sign:
There were a couple of cold cases with drinks...
One side of the store had traditional Samoan clothing and a wooden display case with floral hair picks (jasmine flower) and jewelry.
There were shelves full of cream crackers, chips, soy sauce and other items. The other side had shelves filled with canned sardines and corned beef.
This was one of the desserts - Panikeke (fried dough):
This flower shaped one was called Masi Saina - it looked really pretty. These had green onion and garlic filling. It wasn't sweet but kind of heavy tasting. They tasted better warmed up rather than cold.
These chips were "Burger Flavoured" and were from Fiji. I bought a bag and they did not taste like burgers at all. They were really salty and shaped like wagon wheels.
Turns out that we were still full from the chicken and waffle at Annie Belle's. We had the Tongas plate to go (3 items plus a taro). Bert chose the Lamb Rib, the sapasui noodles, and the Turkey Tail which came with this huge taro half. The taro serves as the starch and it didn't really have much of a flavor. Bert liked it more than I did while TC didn't like it at all. (I took this food shot while at PubCakes)
While it was really fatty, we liked the turkey tail. I wished we got more than one of those. TC ended up finishing it off. I had more of the noodles because I don't really like lamb. We want to try the other items on their menu like the chicken and the fish. So next time, we will actually sit down and eat here...

2nd Foodcrawl with Bert - Lemon Grove
We headed back out to the 94. Look at these freeway signs. Reminds me of what Burma Shave used to do - spread out their messages on separate billboards. These were promoting Barona Casino.
A few more miles down is the city of Lemon Grove:
I think we took the College Ave exit. Check out this old office building. Looks like the font hasn't changed in at least 40 years.
This is what we came to see...
Yes, it's the giant Lemon in Lemon Grove. It's right next to a bus stop and the trolley. As I was taking photos, I felt so conspicuous because there was a damn red light. But then again, there's probably other people who come by and take photos of this thing. It's even listed in the Roadside Attractions site!
Lemon Grove was once home to many citrus groves in the early 1900's.
There is a narrow median of grass and lemon trees protected by a fence. There was a professional photographer taking pictures behind the giant lemon that day.
I also wanted to see the site of Lemon Grove Middle School...there was some history behind this visit.
Lemon Grove was the site of the infamous "Lemon Grove Incident" (info below in blue taken from wikipedia's entry). It was the first successful case of school desegration, predating Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka in 1954, except in the Lemon Grove Incident, school was desegrated for Mexican children.
"The Lemon Grove Incident was an incident that occurred in 1930 and 1931 in Lemon Grove, California, where the local school board attempted to build a separate school for children of Mexican origin.
On July 23, 1930, the all-Anglo Lemon Grove school board decided to build a separate school for children of Mexican heritage without giving notice to their parents.On January 5, 1931, Lemon Grove Grammar School principal Jerome Green, acting under instructions from school trustees, turned away Mexican children at the schoolhouse door, directing them to the new school, which came to be known within the local Mexican American community as la caballeriza, meaning "the stable".
However, the parents had instructed their children to return home if this were to happen, and the children obeyed. The parents refused to send their children to the new school, and since they were not allowed back at the main schoolhouse, this resulted in a boycott. The parents sought the assistance of the Mexican consul in San Diego, Enrique Ferreira. He put them in touch with two attorneys.
The landmark lawsuit resulting from the "Lemon Grove Incident" became the first successful school desegregation court decision in the history of the United States. On March 9, 2007, the Lemon Grove School District recognized Roberto Alvarez, the schoolboy who was the lead plaintiff in the case. The auditorium at the Lemon Grove Middle School, which is on the site of the former grammar school, was dedicated in his honor.
In the decision, the judge ruled that children of Mexican origin could not be segregated under the laws of the state of California, because they were "of the Caucasian race", and laws allowing the segregation of "Oriental", "Negro", and "Indian" children therefore did not apply."
