It's been awhile since I last checked out this particular strip mall.

It's in my old 'hood down south...

Valerio's Bakery closed several years ago when the owner passed away. It is now a pizza place. The Filipino takeout place, Zambales is also gone and replaced by Botanas Locas.  Next to it was a "Bakery" sign so I was hopeful...

Return to the Holy Land Market

A few weekends ago TC and I went out in search of a few places. Bakeries specifically.

Our first stop was here, at a strip mall near Montgomery High School in Otay Mesa. This is the strip mall anchored by CVS (formerly Alpha Beta back in the 70's) and Bank of America. It's changed over the decades and I literally have not driven in this parking lot in at least 20 years!

Unfortunately, the bakery was closed on Sunday....

I was curious about this place because there are three similarly named bakeries in the South Bay.

Gloria's Bakery

Merely just a few minutes away in a tiny strip mall anchored by a 7-11 is another Mexican bakery...

listed only as "Bakery" on the sign...

Gloria's, a small family owned panaderia just a hop, skip and a jump away from nearby Northgate Market (which used to be El Tigre and before that, Safeway back in the 80's)....

Chaca Chaca, chamoy and mango = the perfect combination

Man, it hit close to 100F today! In Chula Vista of all places! I had a coupon burning a hole in my pocket and wanted to use it. Like NOW.

So off we went down south, off the 805 and Palm Ave exit in Otay Mesa...

You can find Teresita's there (home of the Chamango), as well as El Ranchero (known for their birria), Mc D's, and more neighborhood favorites, such as this sushi place up on the hill past KFC...

Return to Mad Lab Craft Brew

[Update - Closed as of Summer 2013 - the owners closed up the tasting room but will still have their bottling production center]

A few weeks had elapsed since our last visit to local nanobrewery, Mad Lab Craft Brewing.

It was time to pay them another visit.

These are the signs you should look for off the 905, Otay Mesa Road, and then Corporate.

Exit here and hang a left at Corporate...

Last month when TC and I were on break, we had a really great lunch at K-Pasta in IB. While there, I picked up one of their postcards and logged onto their website later on at home. I noticed that everything was either made in-house (like the pasta and meatballs) or was made locally, such as the sausages from Tarantino's, the greens from Suzie's Farm (which is a few minutes away from there), and the beer from Coronado Brewing Company as well as the curiously named Mad Lab Craft Brewing Co. When I looked up Mad Lab, I saw that their area code was 92154 (where I grew up) and that they were located in Otay Mesa near the DMV!

I read up on Mad Lab's story and their beer selections and was curious to visit the "Southernmost brewery in the U.S."....Along for the adventure was our good friend (and beer enthusiast), Tatonka...

Craving...
