Meet the new Superman...

Holy hell.

British actor Henry Cavill was just cast as the lead in the Superman reboot to be directed by Zack Snyder ("300" and "Watchmen").

Cavill can be seen on Showtime's "The Tudors" as Charles Brandon, the  (hot) best friend of King Henry the VIII. He will also play Theseus in the upcoming "Immortals". Hmmm, toga anyone? Slay that minotaur Henry!

I recently did a post on Cavill last month, "I Live in a Cave" . Check out those London Dunhill fragrance ads. OMFG. Very Bondian.

Incidentally, Cavill was also a front runnner for the 2006 version of "Superman" (which sucked @$$) but that role went to Brandon Routh. Whatever happened to him anyways? I think that Henry Cavill can fill in those red boots and uh....blue tights quite nicely.

That is all.

Vans

TC got some new Vans slipons today. We went to the outlet this morning to see if they had any good deals, which they did. Buy one get one 1/2 off. (checkered pair is mine - they're old).

TC really liked these comic book style  slipons. I think they're pretty cool myself.

I once had a pair of Converse - they were purple and green and had the Joker (from Batman) all over them. Must've been '89 then since it was after the first Batman movie. Wait, I just googled Joker converse and saw this image through Yahoo. That's what they looked like. They were on clearance somewhere. I was in college, WTF right. I thought they were awesome at the time!

Love the design...

The Happy Bunny socks say "Let's focus on me"  (it's covered by the shoe). She has a shirt that has the Happy Bunny which says, "Me. Just Like You, only better". She likes the Bunny's sarcastic style. We saw some Happy Bunny bandaids at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco which declared, "Your pain makes me happy". I don't know where she gets her sense of humor from.    Pause.

She got two pairs of shoes with her Christmas money. It turned out to be $38 total (with the sale). I didn't take a photo of the other shoes but these are both "Boys" styles. Most of the girl styles and patterns were too "girly" for TC. Too much pink or frou frouesque designs. She likes checkers, plaid, etc. The other pair was a black skate deck shoe with a white stripe. They'll look good with her skinny jeans. No more dresses for her.

Let's take a look at this classic scene featuring checkered Vans from one of the best movies of all time. (The other dude was Eric Stolz by the way.)

Taco night...

Last night's Mexican dinner photos. Most of the ingredients were bought at Northgate Market.

Here are the chicken fajitas which cooked up quite nicely. Marinated with orange and pineapple juices. I added more orange juice towards the end.

The fixings - limes, chopped onions, radish, guacamole, sour cream and pickled carrots and jalapenos.

Thank goodness for ready made guacamole. Thank you Northgate. My new favorite Mexican store besides Mercado Internacional 2000.

The arracheras (flank meat) were from Costco. I marinated them with sliced onions, beer, salt, pepper and lime juice. Bert grilled it up and it came out pretty good, especially for our first time.

Here's the chicken fajitas again.

Our neighbor brought rice and beans. She said she tried refried beans but wasn't happy with it so she brought black beans instead. Her rice was the best Mexican rice I've ever had. So light and fluffy and moist. I'm serious - the best rice!  We also had a green salad out but hardly anyone touched it. They wanted tacos!

I also bought chips and pico de gallo salsa. Our neighbor also brought a cilantro heavy salsa.

She helped grill up the tortillas. These were mini's that I also got at Northgate. We thought the girls would enjoy the small size. I just realized I didn't even take photos of any of the tacos we made. Ooops.

The dessert was the only thing that wasn't Mexican. These were fruit flavored jellies. TC "arranged" these in a tower. The flavors were grape, mango, apple, strawberry and coconut. We also served the Hogetsu mochis (not pictured since I already had a previous post on them).

In addition to a recently unearthed box of Trader Joe's Candy Cane Jo Jo's (wanna be oreos with a crushed peppermint filling), I also made my blueberry cream cheese pastry. Instead of turnovers, I made them into squares. I spread the filling on top of one rectangular sheet, then placed the other sheet on top. The topping was really good - sugar, butter and sliced almonds. Mmmm. Of course, I hijacked the corners so they are not included on this tray.

It was a great evening spent with our neighbors. We ended up playing Scattergories (remember that game?) and then Movies Scene It. The girls had a great time doing Twister as well.

Hogetsu revisit

So I went to Hogetsu on a whim because I wasn't able to make a left turn and was too impatient. I haven't been here in awhile. Looks like they finally fixed up the facades. Last year it was all covered up.

They had a pretty good selection this afternoon. Fully stocked. Plus some new ones I hadn't seen before.

On my way home. This is heading North up 3rd. This is past Naples towards Moss. The old K-Mart is to our left, as is the new Northgate. That's the F Street bookstore that I got stopped at 10+ years ago. Bert and I were going to LaBella's Pizza when a cop flashed his lights and made us pull over. Turns out that my car had expired registration tags. But it also turned out that I never got the registration renewal because the DMV fkd up. They sent it to our old apartment, then we moved and it was never forwarded. We ended up going to the DMV the next day and got the fine waived because the DMV had an 'incomplete' address (no apt. #). Otherwise, that would have been $258. Those stupid fkrs.

It was so stressful because we were celebrating Bert's new job (this was in early '97; he was there for 11 years then they outsourced his job.) and we hada  flight out the next day for our 3 day weekend in Berkeley with Thane. We were living at Bert's parents at the time to save money for our house. Fortunately they lived near the Otay Mesa DMV (the old one on Picador and Del Sol) so we were able to take care of that and then catch our flight out. Remember when Southwest Airlines used to have "Friends fly free"? Gone are those days spending $99 to fly up to SF.

That was a long ass story wasn't it? But that's what I think of whenever I see that damn F Street bookstore sign.

Below, gang graffiti on side of a building off of 3rd and Naples.

Finally, the mochi.  As you can see, there are nine pieces. I thought the our neighbors and the girls might like this for tonight. I know it doesn't go with the Mexican themed dinner but, I guess you could say I was going for some variety.

Top row: striped suama, pink snowball looking one (rice flakes), and a pretty green yokan rolled piece. Middle row: this was new, the Chocolate rectangle, pretty yellow peach shape with a pink flower, and purple flower. Bottom row: Orange rectangle (they also had lemon but I didn't get it), pink peach shape and red/white flower. The fillings are all either red or white bean, except for the chocolate and orange rectangular mochis.

I can't wait to try that chocolate one! The thing about these is that they go bad if you don't eat them within two days, so hopefully we'll finish off a few tonight for dessert.

Gonzalez Northgate Market at Naples Plaza

I like doing these short posts with only a few photos! Even though I still have SF Day 2 and the last few days of our Canada trip in the queue, it's less stressful for me to post these mini posts, sometimes even on the same day!

Earlier today, I went to Northgate for the first time. This is Gonzalez Northgate Market in west Chula Vista on the corner of 3rd and Naples.... (I was at a red light when I took this photo).

I'd been wanting to go here forever. It's past this intersection and near the old K-Mart.

There it is....

I didn't take any interior shots but the place is really nice inside. There are different sections as you walk in. To the right is the bakery, tortillas, ready made salsas, dips, chips, the meat counter (meat and seafood). The middle of the store is the pre-packaged items. The left of the store are the fresh produce.

I bought chicken fajitas, Pacifico beer (for Bert and our neighbor for tonight's Mexican themed dinner) which I didn't even get carded for, salsa, pickled carrots, guacamole, sour cream, radishes, mini corn tortillas, and sodas.  We have arrachera (flank) meat marinating right now at home. Bert will grill that up later this afternoon and we'll make tacos out of that and the marinated chicken. The photo below was majorly cropped because my front window is so dirty - there was a disgusting bird splat right above the sign.

The view facing west onto 3rd from the Northgate lot.  I can't believe that Long John Silver is still there. You know, I have only eaten there once when Bert took me when we were in highschool. He had a buy one get one free coupon. That was at least 25 years ago. Must've been junior year because he was driving by then.

There was so much traffic that I couldn't make a left. So I went the opposite direction and decided what the hell, I'll go to Hogetsu.

Before I get to the Hogetsu pix, here's a fewof the drinks I bought from Northgate for TC and the neighbor girls. TC hijacked the photo by crouching down like a "knuckle dragging monkey" and making an exaggerated overbite while making caveman noises. Nice.

More pix of tonight's dinner to follow...

Shoe fetish...

TOE CLEAVAGE ALERT! You have been warned.

Another shoe post...

These are some of my favorite flats plus one really funky pair (the last one):

These jagged edge spectator platform pumps are by Betseyville by Betsey Johnson. Got 'em about 2 1/2 years ago in Fashion Valley. They remind me of rockabilly pinup girl shoes. I like 'em because they're different. Heel is about 3 inches high. There is a slight platform too.

My Billy Idol studded pair by Steve Madden Luxe. Sale at DSW. They're kind of messed up already at the toe tips. Boo. Ugh, you can see the moles on my feet!

Purple suede with metal grommets. Macy's brand, Style and Co from Fall 2010. Ended up being $15 with the sale and additional % off, etc. Rounded toe not really my thing but I like the metal details and I do wear a lot of purple.

Not pictured as a closeup are the lace patterned flats with the bow. Ann Taylor outlet from 5 years ago. Sale = $10. Kind of a bit too girl for me.

Here's those Betseyville's again.

Where's my hot rod?

McChicken and haircut

What do we have here?

Two items from the Value Menu - Fries and the McChicken sandwich. Total = $2.18 (inc. tax).

It's always classy eating in the confines of my cruisemobile car.

I fell off the wagon and gave in to my urge to have something from McD's today. Another main reason besides being hungry was also borne out of desperation to get at least $10 in change back from a $20. I went to see my hair stylist yesterday. It's been about two months since my last haircut and my once spiky asymmetrical 'do degenerated into a shaggy mess. Well, it still looked all right but the razor cuts had grown out. So yeah, I got my change so I could have enough for my hairstylist's tip.

The McChicken wasn't that bad actually. It was squarish with a dollop of mayo with one small lettuce leaf. I squeezed in one ketchup packet as well. As I was eating my late lunch, I could see the other resto's in the strip mall like Lisa's Cuisine (shitty service), Pho Vien Dong (horrid food), Panda Chef (they do make a great walnut honey shrimp), and some new bbq place. I could have chosen some other place but I wanted my two buck lunch and change.

Before and after pix of the chop:
Taken by good ole' Bert before I left for work. The right side...

and the back...

Here's the left side. You can't see my ears anymore. It's grown that much...

After shots below. Taken in the evening. Now that's more like it. My stylist razor angled the sides again. Right side is  layered and longer than the left. Back is layered and chopped. She also flat ironed it for me.

Right side.

Back. A half inch taken off. Layered and really thinned out. Slight V. Hard to tell since it's black hair on a black shirt.

Left. The return of my spikes.

After getting my hair cut, I went to the bank. I was suprised to see these wanna be thuggy guys in the parking lot trying to whore out their rap CD's.

"Excuse me ma'am would you be interested..."

"No thanks, I'm in a hurry!" (Cutting him off. Yes, I'm that nice).

"Okay, next time!" (like there will be a next time)

Then he added, "I like your hair!"

Ha ha, my first compliment from a street seller!

My hair is a big thing for me. After losing it nearly 3 years ago, I am fkg ecstatic that it's back to normal. And I'm back to normal.  I learned that 'hair is hair' and it does eventually grow back. But when you don't have it, the sensations of not having it are quite odd. You feel every breeze for example. Wigs are itchy even with a skull cap on. I'm also fortunate to not have a lot of gray hairs either. Well, I do have a few but they are hidden and I also have Bert or TC pluck any that show. Thank goodness for Filipino genes because we don't look our (cough) age.

Murrieta's

Went here with some friends recently...Murrieta's, a Mexican restaurant on the east end of Bonita Road.

Lots and lots of blue hairs here. Srsly. Ladies who lunch you know.

I ended up getting something unhealthy.

That happened to be the Chimichanga with rice and beans and a side of guacamole and sour cream. One half was lunch, the other, Bert's dinner. Loved the thinly shredded cheese that was piled high like Donald Trump's toupee. I guess this was a cheese toupee on my chimichanga. And yes, this was quite good! I liked the crispy exterior. The cheese was heavenly. Loved the coolness of the lettuce on the warm fried burrito. Oh yeah.

This was pretty damn brief, eh?

Although there were about 8 of us there for lunch, I didn't feel like doing an photographic incursion on their lunches (ceviche, chile relleno, burrito, carne asada tacos, some metal pot overflowing with seafood and so forth). I was so tempted but there was a long table and it would have been a pain in the @$$ to do it. Thus, only one sad photo of my chimichanga.

Who else at at Murrieta's?

Mary from Foodies: A Southern California Foodblog went here recently! More pix from her post.

They also have really good chips here which come with green and red salsas along with pickled carrots. Muy excelente!
