to check out the 16th Avenue Tiled steps, also known as the Mosaic Steps (sometimes even called the Moraga Steps)...
Whenever we travel, I always like to seek out local and free attractions. This was one of them.
A note if you are in the Sunset District - The streets or avenues running north and south were originally numbered 1- 49; they are now 2 - 48. The east to west streets are named in ascending order in a southward direction after prominent 19th century politicians, military leaders or explorers, as well as 19th century Mexican landowners and Spanish conquistadors.
My camera phone photos don't do justice to how colorful and detailed these amazing steps look in real life. There are 163 steps and each flight was fundraised or sponsored, designed and installed by local residents in 2005. The steps are located between Noriega and Moraga Streets near 16th Ave.
We were able to find parking near the bottom of the hill and since it was pretty early in the morning, there were not too many people around. It was nice being able to take photos, stop on each flight to survey the view and admire the detail of the tile designs closeup.
The view halfway up. See the green patch on the far right? That is Golden Gate Park. The neighborhood is the Inner Sunset which stretches out to the Outer Sunset, reaching the Pacific Ocean.
The view at the top. By this time, there were more people out and about. The stairs are a great workout too but we took it slow instead of running it like a few joggers we passed by.

At the very top of these steps around the bend were even more steps (untiled though) which led to an even greater view...

Yes, definitely check it out! There are 2 tiled staircases within walking distance plus the park at the top of this one.
i LOVE how those steps look! we're heading to san fran for a wedding in october so i'll put this on the suggestion list!
Aren't they great Lynn? I highly recommend going here and to the other tiled steps on Lawton. Afterwards, you can eat over at 8th/9th and Irving. Sooo many good places to eat in the Inner Sunset (and Outer).
