Brunch @ Hanna's Gourmet + lemonade coffee @ Hawthorn

Yesterday Bert and I had some free time....

TC was once again, doing her volunteering gig so off to breakfast we went...

to a place we hadn't had breakfast/brunh at before (just lunch), Hanna's Gourmet. We hadn't been here in a few years and now the exterior is no longer maroon but robin's egg blue.

Every month,  Hanna chooses a different culture to highlight. This time, it was Turkish food! I've eaten there a few years ago when she featured Hungarian food and even was inspired to make my own beef goulash, mushroom soup and chicken paprikash.

(love this blingy chandelier)
I was amused greatly by this sign...

Bert had one of their specials, the Pastrami Benedict with chipotle cream sauce with a side of house potatoes.

I have to say that the cream sauce had a kick to it! I'm not a fan of runny eggs so I stayed clear of the eggs benedict. That sauce though...nice!  The potatoes, which we had on both of our plates was also quite good. Nice thick slices, some crisped and some soft...plus the sauteed onions. Very filling and hearty.

I got the croissant breakfast sandwich which had bacon, egg, avocado, lettuce and tomato. I asked for my eggs to be over hard. Our waiter suggested runny but hell to the no on that for me. To each their own.

Farther down Adams was one of our newer favorite coffee shops, Hawthorn.  Bert was feeling it for their dark chocolate mocha (they use chocolate from Parliament, based in Redlands). I wanted to try their coffee with lemonade. As an afterthought, I also ordered a cortado in case I didn't like my cold drink.

Dark chocolate mocha with almond milk. They have one the best mochas we've had during our many visits to coffee shops around San Diego. Having good chocolate in there makes a bigass difference. No Hershey syrup here, haha (like what I do at home).

Coffee with Lemonade - Now, if people can enjoy Arnold Palmers, when then does this flavor combo not work?  I actually saw this particular combination on Highlight Coffee's Instagram account during our Veterans Day weekend roadtrip last month.  Highlight is a newish coffee shop in Glendale that we didn't get a chance to visit. I saw one of their photos that featured what they called the "Nathan Palmer", lemonade with coffee.  When I saw this combination offered at Hawthorn, I figured I could give it a try.

It's a shot of espresso mixed with house made lemonade. There's a tiny bit of sweetness in there but the flavor is mostly sour from the citrus and bitter from the espresso (tasted like medium roast). The flavor was a bit jarring but I tried to like it, I really did.

Bert was not enamored of this either and preferred to enjoy his mocha.

My "other" drink was my go-to drink, the cortado. Can't go wrong with that here.

This drink has it all for me, just the right amount of espresso (one shot) and milk. Concentrated and not watered down by more unnecessary liquid.

As seen on the way back to our car, we saw this rather "rough" looking cat. He watched us intently from his spot on top of someone's car. I'm  sure this cat has seen it all.

Just basking in the sun...and plotting world domination.

Previous visit to Hawthorn Coffee:
April 2016

I'm pretty sure I've been to Hawthorn more times since but didn't post on it since the drinks were "repeats"...

As for that coffee lemonade...let's just say that I didn't finish it. Not even one fourth. Bert didn't even want to have any more than his one or two sips. I froze it later that day and tried to drink it the next day thinking maybe...just maybe it might taste better. No such luck. Well, I can now cross that flavor combo off my list then, eh. Faaack.
