Penny's Burgers

All good things come to an end. Our mini Veterans weekend road trip was spent in Highland Park...

Given the choice for several hipster breakfast spots or one that has withstood the test of time?

You already what I chose...

On the corner of York and Figueroa  was an eatery that has been there the year of the moon landing (and the year of my birth, whaaat!).  Penny's Burgers is in this strip mall and across the street from a park. There is an outdoor seating area as well as tables inside.

We ordered at the windows outside and went inside since it was still kind of chilly.

View from our window.

Bare bones in here but ambience (or lack of it) is not really a dealbreaker for me. Penny's Burgers serves a mix of American and Mexican diner food. Not gourmet but everyday kind of food which was just fine for us. Let's see, $15 for one entree, or $24 for all three of us?

Our breakfast to tide us over 'til we got back home...

Bert's sandwich (we planned for leftovers so don't judge, heh heh).

My side of crisp hash browns...

TC's toast, hash browns and bacon/cheese and avocado omelet. She was expecting the avocado to be inside the omelet though.  It was more than enough good and ended up being dinner later on.

My patty melt which I was craving. Something about the combo of rye bread, hamburger patty, cheese, and grilled onions is just so satisfying.

Across the street, an older brick building, now a bank...

As we were leaving, we passed by a lady who was selling tamales out of her van! My regret is not buying any!

We would be having coffee further down on Figueroa, passing by these businesses...

There was a mix of the older and more established mom and pop businesses and the newer hipster shops, alogn with vintage Craftsman and Victorian homes, contributing to the gentrification of Highland Park.
