Prince mural in Barrio Logan, Santa pinata + more caffeine @ Por Vida

A mere few minutes away in yet another neighborhood...

was a mural that a friend of mine told me about...

The mural on this garage door was painted shortly after Prince passed away in April.  The artist for this mural was noted muralist and Chicano (even though he is Peruvian) "artivist" (artist/activist) Mario "Torero" Acevedo.  He is an artist whose work I've seen literally all over San Diego but never realized it was the same artist.   If you take the Cesar Chavez exit, the mural is right on Logan Avenue a few steps away from the famous Chicano Park murals (many of which were painted and restored by this very artist). On the sidewalk is the Prince "love" symbol. You can't miss it.

See the orange pail? I didn't realize it was there until I got up close. I moved it a tiny bit over for subsequent shots.

Earlier this year, this store, Rainbow Party Supplies had a Trump pinata. Apparently those were quite popular. I did like that tiki pinata - that's different!  Who wants to bash Santa Claus?

The morning was still young but hey, we were in the mood for more caffeine. Since Por Vida was closeby, we headed over there for our second caffeine fix of the day.  That particular weekend, there was an art installation at the coffee shop featuring 'zines called "San Diego 'Zine Fest".

Heh, a magnet of Morrissey dressed as cholo (complete with teardrop tattol) with  "El Rey" (the King) written in Old English font. I picked one up for TC. We'll just glue a pin backing to it so she can put it on her backpack. She's been on a pin and enamel pin collecting kick.

Another Smiths/Morrissey reference from their song, "There is a light that never goes out":

Here's the song featuring a VERY young Morrissey circa 1986 (The Smiths broke up in 1987, during my senior year in high school):

One of my favorite songs from "The Queen is Dead" and made popular in recent years by its inclusion in the 2009 film, "500 Days of Summer".

The flatscreen with menu is fairly new...

My iced cold brew and D's Mexican mocha...

And now with milk and sugar...

This hit the spot!

The Price  mural is based on this portrait by photographer Platon:

There is a third Prince mural but that is up north in Encinitas but that will be the subject of a future post!

We weren't done quite yet. It was back to Normal Heights for some lunch and dessert....
