"Dearly Beloved" Prince mural, Normal Heights

Over on Adams Avenue...

a few steps away from the Normal Heights sign was...

a mural put up earlier this year by a local artist on the west facing wall of a barbershop. There was a previous mural on it before and I believe it had changed a few times over the years. I remember always wanting to stop to take photos close up but never got around to. Until today. And only because the wall was now memorialized with a mural of the late Prince Rogers Nelson, one of my favorite musicians....

I'll let the photos speak for themselves...

The font for "Dearly Beloved" comes from the same font used for Prince's "Purple Rain" album.

There is a similar font I saw online called "Still Time" that's pretty close to this.

Any Prince fan worth his/her salt would know the "Dearly Beloved" reference, but for those of you that don't, they are the first two words in "Let's Go Crazy", one of the main songs featured in his autobiographical film, "Purple Rain":

The single "Let's Go Crazy" is also known for it's the b-side, "Erotic City", a song that they used to play UNCENSORED at our school dances back in the 80's - You know what I'm talking about Astroboi!  When this song is played on the radio, the "F" word is blanked out. Man, the song may as well not be played if it's going to be silenced. And when I was in high school, I actually thought he was saying "Funk", ha ha.

The Prince mural photo is taken from this movie still from "Purple Rain":

I thought the artist, Travis Crosby did a pretty damn good job memorializing Prince. He painted the mural in early May and in September, someone spray painted a swastika on his face. The artist restored it the next day, but the incident serves as an ugly reminder of the hate that is still out there. Whether it was on Prince's face or any wall for that matter.

There was yet another memorial dedicated to his purple highness in another neighborhood which was going to be our next stop.
