Since Bert had the day off, we did my original plan...making the trek to La Mesa on this cold winter morning...
You could see Mount Miguel covered by clouds. It had rained heavily the night before as well as this morning.
Now THIS has got to be the raddest collection of Christmas blow up decor I've ever seen. This was seen on Lemon Ave in La Mesa while on our way to Sheldon's, a new eatery on La Mesa Blvd.

This was the first I've seen of these Star Wars themed blowups, although I do remember seeing a blow up Yoda wearing a Santa hat in South Park (but that's another post).
A few years ago, this was All Things Bright and British. It was recently reopened as a cafe and eatery with the name as an homage to its former use as a gas station.

There is no seating inside. You order at the counter and seat yourself on their outside patio.

Bert could not resist ordering the butterscotch chip bar flecked with sea salt. We had a few bites before waiting for our drinks and breakfast.

Espresso mocha - This was actually supposed to be the peppermint mocha. It turns out that when Bert ordered this, he changed his mind to the peppermint mocha drink and the server didn't catch it. I was wondering why the drink didn't have a peppermint taste to it. We were drinking it when the second drink arrived (we had only ordered one). The second drink was the "Frostie the Mocha Man" peppermint drink. They were nice enough not to charge us and said the first drink was on them since it was their error. So nice of them!

Both drinks were nice and smooth. Beans were from Cafe Moto.
Our breakfast - Bert's poached eggs with za'atar on avocado toast with slivers of watermelon radish and my latekes with a pear/apple compote and creme fraiche.

Toast was multigrain; bread from Bread and Cie.

The scallion garnish was a nice touch.

Both of our dishes were really good. Just the right size for breakfast - not a ginormous plate but not so miniscule that we felt ripped off and still hungry. I was really craving that potato latke. Nothing beats one that is handmade rather than the boxed kind (yes, we tried that and it does NOT compare).
Lennon poster near the bathroom:

Bert had his coffee. Now it was time for mine at the nearby Public Square, a new favorite. We saw that Dano the sign painter's work was there...

I ordered a Gibraltar for me plus one scone and their two new seasonal butters (cranberry orange and egg nog) to share with Bert.

As always, their coffee was well made...

Of the two new butters, I liked the cranberry orange better which had flecks of real fruit in it.
For a look at what this location USED to look like, here's a post from five years ago:

The folks working here were really friendly. It was also quite nice seeing families and folks enjoying themselves this morning...
