I kind of cringed when I saw that one of their walls was decorated with a passe design...
which happened to be ((cough)) mustaches. Really? I thought that trend was done, yet sadly, I still see young 20-something men with waxed curly 'staches.
You are NOT Dick Dastardly! Drat!
(Nerds over the age of 40 will probably get this Hanna Barbera reference)
Unless you are 70's era Rollie Fingers, or Buffalo Bill, the cowboy NOT the lotion loving freak in "Silence of the Lambs", Wyatt Earp or William Taft for that matter, you should not be wearing a waxed handlebar mustache!

He's still alive by the way! 70 years old!
I saw online that Alfred Coffee, the closest coffee place, was near the steps. Unbeknownst to me, until I saw more pix online, they are known for their "But First Coffee" slogan, which I'd seen before but never made a connection. They are also known for a trendy way of serving coffee (macchiato proper) in a chocolate lined cone. They started offering it several years ago but then it blew up on Instagram. I honestly didn't know it was "a thing".
I liked the idea of the espresso melting the chocolate in the lined ice cream cone and mixing into the drink, as well as the "reward" of eating the cone at the end.

So there it is, Alfred Coffee. It was maybe, mid morning (after 9:30 but before 10:30) and THE ONE ITEM that I wanted was NOT AVAILABLE. In fact, they "ran out" because they only get a certain number of cones on a daily basis. Faaaaaaaahck. :(

I settled for my "go-to" drink, the Gibraltar (basically a Cortado but in the signature Gibraltar tumbler). Bert had the house coffee. Their prices were about .50 to $1 more than the usual hipster places in San Diego. Damn you Alfred Cone limited availability.

When the sleeve was removed...

...you could see the cup design. No seats inside, therefore, an outside table where we scrounged unoccupiedchairs from other tables.

(Bert's Velveteria shirt featuring Tarita Brando made an appearance in my previous post, "Crappy sea salt coffee from Tastea Grill + a revisit to Hogetsu & Gunco", Feb 2015)
The shirt would be fitting for our next photoshoot at our favorite musuem.
My Gibraltar was pretty smooth which I enjoyed...

Bert's house coffee was just okay. Not earth shattering or OMG-this-is-so-good-I-must-have-another.
The view from our table...

Wallpaper hearts. I'm sure you can google someone holding their coffee cup against this wall or the infamous mustache wall, ha ha.

If you want to see what that coffee in a cone is like here's a short video clip (not from this Alfred location though):

That kind of sucked that they ran out of the chocolate lined cones but oh well, our timing just wasn't right. But at least we had a fun morning exploring earlier, coffee cone or not.
It was time to take the long way to Chinatown...
