Plazas Mexican Food

I was enjoying my winter break so far...

Almost two weeks down...

This particular sunny morning was spent with my very good friend Cathy of mmm-yoso...

We headed down south hoping to go to a place that was open only during the end of the week.  Buuuuuuut...since this was the holidays, I didn't take into account that some businesses would be on vacation as well. In this case, my first choice for breakfast was Birria Fernandez and sadly, it was closed. They even had a huge banner that said, "Closed for the holidays" so Plan B was set into motion.

This great plan involved driving up Broadway in Chula Vista pondering our choices. I suggested Manna, a tried and true favorite, but as I approached Anita Street, the green awning of Plazas Mexican Food beckoned to us...

La Ley recommended the menudo at Plazas several years ago and I never got around to going there...until now.

All of their exterior glass services were covered with menu items.

Caldo de Pescado? Why yes. Plus that menudo.

The restaurant was decorated for Christmas...

You order at the counter and sit wherever you wish.

Two soups for breakfast (with lots of leftover)...Flour tortillas for the fish soup for Cathy and corn for my menudo; we shared both.

Tripe, tripe, and more tripe plus hominy kernels.  The slightly gamy broth was piping hot as well.

Caldo de pescado had substantial meaty fish portions in there (about four to five good sized pieces) along with chunky vegetables (celery, carrots potatoes, tomatoes, zucchini and chayote). The broth was very flavorful

We enjoyed both of the soups. If I had to choose one, I would say that I liked Cathy's fish soup better. It was so flavorful and hearty. My menudo was all right but I couldn't picture myself eating a whole bowl of it. It's been said that menudo is a good hangover cure, but I'm sorry to say that I didn't put that to the test since I didn't have a massive alcohol bender the night before.  Menudo traditionally has only honeycomb tripe and hominy but I was wishing there was actual meat in there.

There is no website but here the reviews from you know where

I got to use my Spanish ordering food skills too. Actually at most of all of the places  in CV we went to this morning, we were the only non-Mexicans (a good sign).  I plan to return to Plazas with Bert and TC so that we can try their caldo de birria (my original craving).

Next stop...coffee!
