"Freedom" mural at Einstein Academy + Beth Emmerich utility boxes

From Golden Hill, we made our way to neighboring South Park...

we were in search of a particular mural by Gloria Muriel on Beech Street but could't find it...

However, we were also here to view the murals on the walls of Albert Einstein Charter Academy which were vaguely reminiscent of the style of Keith Haring.  Reading the info on the school's wall, the mural was actually designed by a artist named Rocco from Yokohoma, Japan (San Diego's sister city), along with local schoolchildren from Brooklyn Elementary. Mario Torero (featured in my previous posts) as well as this school's students helped paint the mural in 1990.

The mural was restored several years ago, but only the bottom half. You can tell the difference; the top half is still faded after nearly three decades.

The school's walls have a vibrant energy to them with all of the radiating lines. I wonder when the top half of the murals will be restored?

This series of painted utility boxes is on Beech Street a few doors down from Buona Forchetta. We were trying to find a mural by Gloria Muriel at the Goldline Salon. We couldn't find it and I suspect that maybe the mural is inside the salon rather than outside. Hmmm.

Turns out that this vibrant trio of utility boxes were painted by local artist Beth Emmerich (who has also collaborated on artworks throughout San Diego with Gloria Muriel; I'll be doing a separate post on Beth Emmerich's work in the future).

These horse benches were rather whimsical. At a quick glance, I thought they were elongated Scottish terriers (as dumb as that might sound). But no, they were kneeling horses.

If I'm in the area again during the break, I'll have to go when Goldline Salon is open to check out that Glow mural.

It was nice to be able to see the mural up close. D and I took our shots across the street and up close. Being both educators, we like seeing how schools are beautified through art.

Our next stop would be in another core San Diego neighborhood. It was a mural dedicated to a musical legend who died tragically in April...
