Golden Hill Cafe + "Signifire"

Earlier today, D and I went out for an a morning adventure...

First up was coffee (part of which will be detailed in my coffee round up post)...

We'd just enjoyed our amazing holiday drinks at Dark Horse, fast becoming one of my favorite spots. Parking is so much easier over here (if you get here early enough) rather than North Park or Normal Heights.

Breakfast was just down the street, a few blocks north at the now green (paint sale anyone?) Golden Hill Cafe. In fact, the whole damn building, which also houses Panchita's Bakery and Krisp (formerly Jaycee Market), is now olive green.

As seen in this older shot from last year, the rounded corners, windows and glass blocks are of the style, Streamline Moderne (an offshoot of Art Deco). In fact, the Golden Hill Cafe is even cited in this post on Streamline Modern buildings in San Diego. The building looked even more Art Deco when it was stark white. Having it this shade of green is a bit jarring, at least to my eyes. Another article linked at the end incorrectly identifies the style as California Modern, but no, it isn't.

Inside, there is an old school counter. Christmas decor is also up. It was nice to see a mix of folks from all ethnicities and demographics. Our waitress was also very nice. This is not a hipster joint with overpriced frou frou food. It's your basic American diner food, moderately priced. It's not dirt cheap like George's or overly expensive like Great Maple.

Spied on the plastic wrap for the vase of roses was the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The view from our window where planes fly by every ten minutes.

We planned to eat light since we had plans for a new ramen place later.

My hash browns with scrambled eggs and toast, which curiously, was cut horizontally; most toast I've had is cut in half or diagonally. D's tortillas with eggs and bacon.

Would you look at those hashbrowns? Crispy and lacy these were.

We enjoyed our breakfast here. It was a low key kind of place. Nice folks who work here. When I asked for a plastic carry out bag, one of the ladies jokingl said, "Sure, but it's from the 99 Store"! Hey, whatever works, right?

On the same street, on the way back to our car, we passed by the Golden Hill Fire Department where we saw this interesting sculpture.

It's been here since 1997.

Here is a link to a video featuring the artist (it's a bit long at 24 min, but I just watched the first few minutes to get a feel for it). The detail in the mosaic work is beautiful isn't it? The colors are still vibrant after all these years.

One last thing. I noticed they had this notice framed in the restaurant. Remember that movie? I didn't realize it was filmed in San Diego!

Here is the trailer to K-9. I have to say that I haven't watched this movie, at least by choice. If anything, it was probably watched for a few minutes on network tv before clicking next channel on the remote.

Wow, towards the end, you can see the familiar blue lines of the Coronado Bay Bridge! They must have been filming that scene near Barrio Logan.

The movie "K-9" a cop/dog buddy film released in 19889, starred Jim Belushi as well as as Ed O'Neill. Older folks like me will remember him as Ed Bundy from "Married with Children". Younger audiences will know him as the dad in "Modern Family" (he is married to Sofia Vergara's character)

and while this isn't really an article on the cafe itself, there is an older photo of the cafe on this page before it was painted green. I guess they used an older photo because it's been green for at least a couple of years now.

Little did D know that our morning excursion would also include street art hunting. Thank goodness I have a very open minded friend who didn't mind doing some walking around...
