Nothing Bundt Cakes in Eastlake and what else is new...

Earlier this month, I got the word that it was finally open...

Nothing Bundt Cakes that is. It had replaced a coffee/smoothie shop which used to be a Coffee, Bean, Tea & Leaf place before. Nothing seems to last in this little corner of Eastlake Village Walk...

TC and I wanted to see what they had and if they had any soft opening freebies...

I was a bit irritiated because I left my coupon at home and could have used it here. It was the last day to use it too.

This is how the interior used to look back in November...

Now it's all gussied up and very pretty and very girly inside.

We were greeted with a "Welcome to Nothing Bundt Cakes, please try a sample of our cinnamon swirl"

So yes, we did get one!

which I thought was pretty good. It was a quick in an out (insert dirty joke here) and cursory look at the premises before we left.

A few days later, I got an email notice that said the coupon offer was extended until January 18th.

Well now, that's more like it, eh.

Of course, I went there right after work to make use of the offer. One bundlet is $4.49 but it's a much better deal with the coupon. If it wasn't for the offer, I wouldn't even be using it to be honest.

The lone two samples left were the featured flavor, chocolate chocolate chip, which I actually wanted the first and last time I was in a Nothing Bundt Cakes place (in Mission Valley)

They had the store decorated for Valentine's already...

Many flavors were available - red velvet, white chocolate raspberry, carrot, chocolate chip, etc...

I got the last chocolate chocolate chip. I was hoping the lady in front of me wouldn't get it.

Their grand opening will be Friday Janaury 24th. Along with the chocolate chocolate chip, I also got pecan praline (Bert likes that flavor in general).

Of the two bundlets I got with the coupon offer, TC and I liked the double chocolate chip one the best. I was thinking of getting the chocolate turtle but didn't want to get two similar looking cakes.

We didn't try taking the bundlet out of the container. They got messed up last time.  Glad I had a coupon!

Remember that place down in south San Diego that sells fried chicken skin goodness by the pound? Well, Kababayan is now closed. This sad fact was discovered this past weekend by Cathy of mmm-yoso while doing her ethnic grocery rounds. Kababayan has relocated but I will let Cathy tell that story when she chooses to post it.

Dagnabbit. Empty.

Sometime late last month I stopped by to take a look at the old Coop's West Texas BBQ...

The signage is still there, but look closely...

Coop's will soon be Croom's!

Croom's is a great little mom 'n pop bbq joint on H St (across from the Chula Vista mall) and it will be nice for them to expand. Ironic that they would take over the space by their former competitor.

Last week while out with Cathy searching for the Roast Coach Coffee Bar, which is supposed to be in front of the old Sea Rocket Bistro on 30th,  we saw this...

Firstly, no Roach Coach mobile pour over coffee bar and secondly, "Coming Soon" signs on the windows.

Apparently, the former locale of Sea Rocket (which used to be the old Linkery) is now going to be some mac 'n cheese place, called, and get this, "Bazinga".

I'm not than unhip so I know that's a catchphrase used in a show I haven't watched before (gasp of collective horror), "The Big Bang Theory".

All my friends tell me that it's a fun and geeky show and that I would love it. Well, I'm sure I would but I hardly ever watch TV and I can't bother myself to get into a show that's already several seasons in.

So yeah, a mac 'n cheese place. Really. Not sure if I'd go there but TC would love it.

As for TV, I'm saving myself for Season 4 of "Game of Thrones" this spring...I need to know what happens next! Reading the third $#%@ book is taking too long because I'm trying to finish the Beatles biography, "Tune In" by Mark Lewisohn first!

I was at a summer potluck where someone brought TWO of the 'Nothing Bundts'; excellent. How polite of you to not mention my initial reaction at Kababayan being closed; post started but need to go back. Big Bang is just a 30 minute (smart) comedy and each episode can stand alone; many reruns are on various channels on weekdays as well as the weekend.

I can't even place where that is in Eastlake. Is it by Southwestern College?

hi cathy - yes, how polite, huh, haha! I loved what you wrote. hmmm, a certain four letter word. One of these days I'll have to watch BBT.

hi darlene - it's all the way out in Eastlake, past the Target. In the shopping center that had Borders (which is now TJ Maxx), Sprouts and Trader Joe's.

Hmm! A mac n cheese restaurant... I might have to check that out when it opens! Nothing Bundt is okay, maybe I just haven't had the good flavors to be really super impressed.

Seems like it will be a 'hipster' mac 'n cheese place. they will probably use fancy ingredients. as for the bundt place, unless i have a coupon, i ain't going back, haha.
