Broke Girls Coffee Bar

[Update - BGCB closed May 2015 and is now Backyard Cafe]

We are such spoiled babies here in San Diego. I didn't even wear my kick ass boots or any sweaters during my winter break.  That's what 70+ weather will do...Unfortunately, break is now over and work resumes once again tomorrow.

After the fun run in with Bart the cat at the Adams Avenue Book Store, we made the short walk to a nearby coffee place...

located just a few steps away next to a locksmith and a folk arts store.

You can't miss seeing the big pink "coffee" banner or the rainbow flag..

We were a little hungry so this place would also serve as a our lunch destination

There is a covered outdoor seating area made with reclaimed wood.

Their BGCB logo is patterned after NYC's famous music club, CBGB, where bands like Blondie, The Ramones, and the Patti Smith Group got their start. The store is owned and operated by two 40-something year old women who quit their jobs and put their life savings into this shop. Only one of them was there the day of our visit.

Their pour over station:

I loved the look of this place. Tin ceiling tiles, posters of musicians and bands (Bowie, Ramones, Blondie) and checkers!

They had both savory and sweet items. We got a couple of quiches for our lunch. The quiches are made by one of the ladies; while the pastries are made by the other.

The coffee bar also serves as a sort of rotating gallery for local artists. The artist for the month was Elizabeth Bruno who had some really cool portraits. Her self portrait can be seen right beneath the pendant lamp. I told the lady that she looked just like Chrissie Hynde (lead singer of the Pretenders and my eyeliner idol when I was a teen).

Our quiches and our drinks. I had an iced mocha while TC had a vanilla Italian soda. She put in some half and half to make it creamy at the suggestion of the owner.

I had the bacon quiche while TC had the pulled pork. Both were served warmed up.

The crust was pretty thick and substantial. The fillings were also pretty hearty.

The bacon topping wasn't as well fried as it could have been. Candied bacon would also have been a nice touch. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed this very much.

There is a shared inner courtyard with even more seating between the coffee bar and the folk art store next door.

The sign below advertises BGCB's progressive idea of "Suspended Coffee" where you can buy a cup of coffee for someone else. You pay for it, they set the cup aside and use it for whoever wants it but can't pay. I wonder if they have gotten any customers who abused that free cup offering? Hopefully not too many.

This was a cute little quirky spot to have a bit of a light lunch and a few beverages. The lady working there was really cool too. I like their rock 'n roll/punk aesthetic in here and that they are not in the busy part of Normal Heights.

I'll have to go again with Bert so he can try their actual coffee, not the iced stuff I usually get, ha ha.
