A Rosca from Pancho Villa's Farmer's Market

Earlier today TC and I went out for lunch and stopped by here before going home...

Pancho Villa's is right off the 805 and El Cajon Blvd exit and is a market I haven't  yet explored...until today, that is.

Today also happens to be the Feast of the Three Kings, the 12th day after Christmas when the three kings went to visit the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. This holy day is also known as The Epiphany (more info on my previous post linked at the end)

In the Mexican supermarkets you will be able to find a very special bread made for this occasion.

In the panaderia/tortilleria section, workers were busy making fresh tortillas and freshly baked Rosca de Reyes bread...

I was excited to see these roscas being taken out...

This particular size, the 8" round, was the smallest size and cost $6.99.

There was several displays with larger boxed roscas going for $15.99.

I like the peekabo cutout design of this box (which has a plastic covering), where you can see a glimpse of your cake.

On our way out was another rack with even bigger roscas:

These must be party size or something! I wonder how many plastic babies they put in there?

Here is ours...

From what I remember from last year's rosca, the bread is flaky and filled with dried, sweet fruit bits. There were even candied fig halves on this which I liked.

I like the buttery sugar topping!

Although this video is from Vallarta Supermarket (not Pancho Villa's), it was informative and concise regarding the tradition of the rosca de Reyes bread:

We'll be having ours later tonight!

Update - No cream cheese in this one (like the one we had last year from TJ).  I also got the plastic baby and it looked different than it did in my 2008 post (that baby was more detailed and was in a sitting position).

There were TWO plastic babies in this rosca...

This one didn't have a lot of detail though. It looks kinda of creepy.

Although we didn't really explore the market in depth, it just means another visit in the near future, especially for their hot prepared foods.

For a more comprehensive view of Rosca de Reyes, I am waiting on Cathy from mmm-yoso's post. Once that's up, I will link it.

Aaaaand here it is (posted on Tuesday, January 7th)!

Oh wow, you were right there at the perfect time: great photos. Pancho Villa is another favorite market, the steam tray area has some gems.

hi cathy - Thanks for the rec for PV. I've always wanted to go there whenever I went up the offramp to get to El Cajon Blvd. I'm glad our rosca was fresh!
