Panchita's - Barrio Logan & a VoG sighting

Totally buzzed from all that caffeine from Cafe Moto, we made our way along Logan Ave past the historic murals of Chicano Park...

near the shadow of the San Diego's iconic Coronado Bridge...

If you are coming of the Crosby ext from the 5 freeway to the bridge, the bakery would be in that first small mini market area that you see.

We ended up passing it up by mistake and had to make a U-turn where we passed a long ass line of people waiting to get into Los Cuatros Milpas, a Barrio Logan institution known for their hearty Mexican food. Seriously, the line was DOWN THE STREET. Yikes!

As with their Golden Hill location, Panchita's bakery proudly hung their "30th Anniversary" banner..

This location is much much smaller than the one in Golden Hill. It smelled just as good though.

Their items weren't labeled either but you could figure out what was what, especially if you'd been to other Mexican bakeries. You tend to see the same thing like these cookies, some with colored doughs. The triangluar  one with three colors (cut off at the right) are called "payasos" (or "clowns"). Below that are crescent, corn, and wheel shaped cookies, then a few conchas with sugar paste on top. I am not a fan of Mexican cookies - the dough is bland and dry for my tastes.

The refrigerated racks held mini cakes with frosting and fruit fillings.

They had pastries covered with powdered sugar as well as fruit filled empadas and even the molasses flavored pig shaped cookies (the darker one in the middle).

Since we were out and about, we didn't get anything that would spoil in the car, so only three were obtained to enjoy for later. An "oreja" ("ear") for TC, a wheel-shaped pastry for me (I hadn't seen this before), and a flaky pastry for Bert (I liked the delicate glazed sugar top). Each pastry was about .85. There were others that cost a little more but for the most part, everything was pretty much under $1 each.

As we were leaving, I looked across the parking lot at the base of the offramp to the bridge and there she was...

a fantastic rendition of the Virgin of Guadalupe complete with the peasant Juan Diego offering her roses...

This vivid mural was quite striking. Next time I'm in the area, I'll have to take a closer look since this was taken with my zoom lens.

At home, the wheel shaped pastry...

I only had a few bites since it was too dry for my liking. Bert ended up having it the next day with his morning coffee...

The bakery was smaller than I expected but not the smallest I'd been to. They had a good selection but again, not as much as the Golden Hill location (which has the added benefit of having each  pastry rack labeled and priced). The lady working there was really nice  (like everyone I've run into at all the panaderias).

There is no website, but here is their FB page and the mixed bag o' reviews from that four lettered site.

Here is my previous post on Panchita's Golden Hill location:

We would end up taking "the scenic route" to Point Loma via Harbor Drive...
