Dark Horse Coffee Roasters

It was already getting quite warm...

It's fun to complain about our "harsh" winters here in San Diego with 75F temps in December, haha.

We headed west on Adams once more to get a caffeine fix at a place past the sign...

Dark Horse Coffee Roasters is nearly one year old now and is considered one of San Diego's "hip" coffee roasters. I'm not a coffee connoisseur by any stretch but I was curious to check them out.

It has a cool horse logo, designed by the owner Daniel Charlson, who also designed everything else in the shop.

There isn't too much seating inside and only a small bench outside.

Bert got the Guatemala pour over coffee. It was a dark, smooth roast with hints of chocolate.

TC had a berry ice tea while I had the cold brew iced coffee. Since it was premade, I couldn't choose a roast but that was okay with me.

They also had a small selection of baked goods (some of which were vegan which to me is synomous with devoid of flavor)...

TC and I were burning up in the seats by the window. The other seats (although empty) were "taken" by two other girls who were either workers or friends of the girl working.

Bert's coffee before he added the sugar and cream...

I had to dump some sugar in my iced coffee since it was quite bitter without it.

As you can see, we got one small baked item, a so-called "donut" which cost $1.50 and was totally NOT worth it. This was a cinnamon vegan donut. A tiny donut without a hole. I think this was baked and not fried.  Ugh. TC liked this thing while Bert and I thought this didn't even count as a real pastry.

I could've had a donut made with glorious animal products  for .85 cents at our local donut joint. Vegan donuts should not exist.

TC's tea was not something she enjoyed either. It was too bitter for her tastes despite her dumping sugar and honey in it. I ended up finishing it for her later (I actually liked it!).

Bert enjoyed his coffee but found the flavor more bitter than he would have liked. It wasn't as smooth as he expected it to be. He tried not to put too much half and half in it so he could taste the true flavor.

We're not coffee geeks but it was interesting to go into this place to see what the hype was about. French press, cold brew, pour over. It's all the same to me (insert gasp of collective horror by the coffee hipsters here).

There are some other hipster coffee joints that we would end up hitting up later that week...

Nice. The Mister and I like bitter, so suppose I'd have to try it here once to see the coffee and tea is that bad...the icing on the 'donut' seems to have vanilla specks in it, however that doesn't make it worth almost double of other 'donuts'.

hi cathy - yes, those were probably vanilla specks. but this wasn't even fried #$%@. why even call it a donut. this was baked, probably in an easy bake oven, haha.
