In the 60's, the El Cortez was the tallest building downtown, according to my dad. It was probably a cool sight to see when they still had their outdoor glass elevator.
Our next stop was a bridge my sis hadn't yet explored and was curious to cross...
Bert, TC and I did our visit last spring when we vowed to cross all the bridges in Bankers Hill. I just thought it was neat that my sis was thinking the same thing apart from me.
Here's another one of those lending libraries. This was at the south end of the Quince Street Bridge, a wooden trestle bridge that spans Maple Canyon in Bankers Hill.

West side of the bridge:

There weren't too many crossers that day but we did see a couple taking photographs.

In the distance is Point Loma and the bridge you can barely see in the back is the First Avenue Bridge which we saw back in July.

Despite being a massive thrill seeker, Nephew #2 I(who loves fast rollercoasters, BMX biking, and skateboarding) was still nervous crossing this bridge even though it was pretty stable and didn't sway like the Spruce Street Bridge. Go figure.
At the north end of the bridge, some unripe quince fruits.

I like the view from this end. The kids were curious about a trail they saw at the bottom of the canyon but we weren't going to be doing any of that today.

These next few shots were taken by TC...

One last look before taking off...

I don't mind walking across these bridges. It's driving across bridges that freak me out. The Coronado Bay Bridge is one that still gives me the chills when I drive it, along with the 125 bridge from the 8 freeway. That one is pretty high and steep and I don't like the thought of being that high up and moving. As a passenger, I'm a little more relaxed but when I have to drive it, it's white knuckle time.
I had to throw in few songs with the word "bridge" in the title. This first ditty, "Under the Bridge" is about cocaine and heron addiction and a relationship gone bad (lifted straight from lead singer Anthony Keidis' life):
I remember when this song came out back in 1992. I was already done with college and was still thinking about what graduate program to pursue.
This song brought the Red Hots to mainstream popularity even though their new fans who liked this "pretty" sounding song weren't aware of their early funk background. Prior to that, they were an "underground" band and this was kind of their "sellout" song. One of my friends, the Arsonist, was bummed that the Red Hots got more mainstream.
This one is a slightly nastier song, by Fergie (Mrs. Josh Duhamel to you, haha)...
"Oh snap!", haha!
Fergie Ferg was twerking way before Miley Cyrus was doing it. And if you check out old rap videos from the late 80's, there was a LOT of twerkin' goin' on as well and it wasn't that big of a deal. Sir Mix a Lot anyone?
Previous visit to the Quince Street Bridge
June 2013
That was our MLK day...with the exception of our semi-crappy lunch at the Filipino Food & Bakery, everything else was pretty cool. The kids got to spend some time together and enjoy different treats as well. The next event with all the cousins is Super Bowl Sunday where nobody will be watching the game. Who the #%@# thought of having the game in a state where it's freezing??? And the stadium is OPEN to the elements? I feel sorry for the fans who are forking out the dough for this game...Sigh.
But hey, bbq is on the menu and that's all I care about!

I love those little free community libraries - I find them endearing and it's nice to know something like that can exist and help gets books out there! I have never been on any of those bridges. Bridges kind of freak me out. More when I was younger and had this weird fear of an earthquake happening while I was on a bridge. Ugh. It'd be fun to cross them though, maybe Jake & I will take the kids on a little "bridge hunting" trek.
hi mary, yeah aren't those cute? i don't know how those would fly in our neighborhood. the teenagers in the area would steal the books and never return them, haha.
about the bridges, if you click on my old bridge posts (archive labels - bridge), you can find all the different bridges of Bankers Hill (First Ave, Spruce, Quince) plus another link I found on the web. We also crossed the Vermont bridge last year - it's the one behind Trader Joe's in Hillcrest. I think you guys would like the Spruce St. suspension bridge the best.
Bridges + Earthquakes would also freak me out.
I save up my magazines and when we drive and stop at Rest Areas, leave the ones I have re-read for the final time (and ripped off the address labels) in the general area around the vending machines, hoping that people will do the same. I like the little library idea for books. My fearful driving bridge is the 805 going over the 8. I speed over it.
Hi cathy - that's a neat idea. i like the thought of just sharing reading materials for others to enjoy. i freak out driving over the coronado bridge. i try to avoid it, haha.
