The Surfing Madonna

A pleasant surprise that day was coming across the infamous Surfing Madonna...

which was actually on our itinerary (yes, I had one, cough cough)...

We were actually planning to see it after our dessert but didn't realize we would be passing it by while en route to our dessert destination (which was more inland).

The 10x10 mosaic mural is located on the northern exterior wall of Leucadia Pizzeria...

Although we didn't stop the car to repark, I was able to get a few shots of the mural while we were at a red light.

I love the look of this mural and the pro-environmental message it bears. I also like that the little angel that is holding up the Virgin is also depicted on the mural. If you look closely, you can find him ON the surfboard near her feet.

There is a video linked at the end of this post which shows the inset glass and tile work in closer detail. Next time we go here, I would like to see it up close. This zoom shot does not do it justice.

I'm glad the mural was moved here, a busier thoroughfare, where more people can see it. It was previously at a coffee shop's courtyard; the original spot is not too far from this location, under the freeway.

Here is a video with more information about the artist and better views of the mural upclose.

Note - the video is not updated since the location they show is from when it was at the coffee shop.

Our last stop of the day would be an ice cream place, also in Encinitas...
