I remember reading controversy about the drive through and the neighbors being unhappy with the noise and extra traffic it brought to the neighborhood...
Around the corner, construction was going on...
This is at the very end of 30th before it dog legs into Upas...

Something new is being built. Not sure what yet. Condos?
Our original plan was to have aebelskivers at the Roast Coach coffee bar located in front of the old Sea Rocket Grill. Aebelskivers are also known as Danish pancake balls and this place supposedly had sweet and savory versions. I'd been wanting to try that dessert for so long. When we were in Solvang, they were sold at every bakery it seemed, but they are hard to find in San Diego. Anyhow, I read that they were sold at the Roast Coach but guess what...
The folks at that coffee bar were no longer there. I'm not sure if they left when Sea Rocket left or what. So I suggested this bakery which was literally around the corner, Cardamom Cafe and Bakery...

We got there before they closed up...

their baker display case was running on empty since it was almost closing time...

The one dessert Cathy wanted to try was already all gone (the chocolate croissant), but no worries...

we chose a couple of other things which ended up being really good choices!
It was nice and nearly empty during our visit. People were finishing up their lunches...

They also serve breakfast in addition to their light lunch offerings...

Sigh...we would have loved that Belgian Double Chocolate croissant...

Cathy chose the almond croissant because their sign stated that they made their own almond filling. I chose the Sticky's bun (the one with pecans was already gone as well). Our drinks were coffee and iced mocha.

Holy cow, I didn't realize my iced coffee would come in a mug this large!

I ended up taking most of it home in a to-go cup.

It tasted all right but nothing can top Cafe Moto's awesome iced coffee...
As for that sticky bun, the toffee or caramel on this bun was so so good!

And the almond croissant? It was so buttery and flaky...

and filled with that delicious almond filling. We only managed a few bites, then halved our desserts to share and take home.

Bert really liked both of the pastries too, ha ha. He is usually the recipient of my leftovers (along with TC).
Who else went to Cardamom Cafe & Bakery?
Mary went back in 2011 for breakfast, plus I heard good things about this place from Dennis and JennyWenny.
I'm glad we went here but I still want to try some aebelskivers somewhere!

Their website has a lot of "coming soon" for their links, so it's not really that functional

I will definitely need to return so I can try the Belgian Double Chocolate croissant and the sticky bun with pecans!

Just wanted to let you know that the Roast Coach did move with the closing of Sea Rocket. they are now located outside of The Smoking Goat.
Hello Gina, thanks for visiting and for the info of the move. I'll have to try catching the Roast Coast another time. :)
Such quality baking. I hope to get The Mister out for breakfast here soon. This was a great alternate dessert; good there are always backups, although I am still wanting aebelskivers...
i'm bummed we missed out on that chocolate croissant but hey, next time, right? i hope you and your husband get to try it out. maybe you can catch the aebelskivers out near the smoking goat (just down the street on 30th).
