and coffee was in order here...
at one of my favorite spots, Cafe Moto. Their coffee is straight up excellent. None of this frou frou flavored crap or frappes here. Their menu is short and simple.

My macchiato, served with an almond cookie, an unexpected but welcome touch.

Cathy's cappucino, also with an almond cookie (hers was chocolate).

Both of our drinks were so well made. Just the perfect size with just enough milk.

In the backroom, we checked out their coffee store...

And what have we here? There's that device I was totally coveting but not really wanting since I'd hardly use it...the professional cream whipper, which needs nitrous whipped cream chargers.

I love that almost every place we went to had Christmas trees...

Need some coffee? Or tea? Or $5,000 espresso machines?

Interesting this was...

After enjoying our drinks, I wanted to show Cathy where Cafe Virtuoso was...A mere few steps away was a run down looking building with THIS sign on it. This will be the new site of the upcoming Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. I don't know how the parking situation will be because it's not that great, but who knows, maybe they will have their own private lot or something.

Wow...no urinating OR defecating.
At the corner of Cesar Chavez Way and Harbor Drive to get to the 5 and head down south again.

Just like Birria Fernandez, my original plan for dessert,Star Dust Donuts was closed for the holidays...Plan B was a plethora of Mexican bakeries in the South Bay, starting with Gloria's.

I love that they had a plastic light up Santa by their coffee machine.
Their racks are always well stocked with all kinds of pan dulce and other pastries.

Fast forward to my photo from home - My chocolate concha, a cinnamon turnover and a flaky coiled pastry, below that, my picadillo filled bread (meat and cheese).

And while I'm at it, here are some older photos of their breads from last year: ham/jalapeno and picadillo. They have about eight or more different flavors in a glass case. The lady will even ask if you want them filled reads warmed up.

A few minutes away from Gloria's is Panaderia Gonzalez. As you can see from their window, they were advertising Rosca de Reyes (aka King's Bread eaten on Epiphany); available only during January 4, 5, and 6.

They don't have a large selection like Gloria's. Their racks were on the sparse side. But I like going here more for their meat and cheese filled breads. The fillings are not enclosed like Gloria's. The bread is also different. They had cheese and jalapeno, cream cheese and jalapeno as well as my favorite, cheese, jalapeno and pepperoni which Cathy also likes.

My tray - a flat sugar crystal crusted flaky pastry plus the pepperoni cheese bread.

Sorry, blurry.
Bert really liked having this flaky pastry with his coffee. Coincidentally Cathy also picked the same pastry.

Bert likes this bread as well...

As an added bonus, the girl working the counter offered us a choice of a calendar. I never even knew they offered calendars here. I know the ethnic markets do, so this was a nice surprise. Even cooler was the fact that she offered us so many choices, not just one.

One of our later stops was Moreliana Pan in Chula Vista. Cathy bought a few items here. I was hoping they would have their decorated tree...

which, as you can see, they did. I love that they made real pan dulce ornaments. My favorite pan dulces were here, the tacos de queso (now .60; they used to be .40) and the coyotas de piloncillo but I held off today.

Not shown was our visit to nearby Hogetsu, a Japanese tea cakes shop (offers mochi and other Japanese sweets). I'm sure Cathy will do a post on these places eventually. I was even tempted to take us to Los Pollos, a Cuban bakery, but we already went to so many places...Another time for sure!

July 2015 - Actually I've gone so many times since then but I didn't post on those revisits since I didn't really get anything "new", just my tried and true favorite pastries
Another fun morning with Cathy doing a crawl of bakeries in the South Bay (Mexican and Japanese) after having enjoyed great coffee and Mexican soup from Plazas.
A few more days until the new year. It was supposed to rain tomorrow. Bert and I had a planned breakfast outing with our good friend Tatonka...

You sure were busy during your break CC! Good to know Moreliana's is still doing good business
I know, well, I had to make due with the time I had during winter break. Now that work has begun again, it's back to being a hermit, ha ha. Yes, Moreliana seems to be doing quite well. The folks who work there are so very nice.
