Scenes from Golden Hill + lunch @ Pizzeria Luigi & pastries from Panchita's

This nice sidewalk emblem can be found on the southeast corner of 25th and Broadway...

in front of the Golden Hill Fire Department, with it's fabulous art deco style building.  Sufficiently caffeinated by our drinks from the newest location of Dark Horse Coffee...we made our way north on 25th for lunch...

passing by lovely historic homes such as this...

and a strip mall that has the newest location of Anakin's (the other location is next to a barber shop on Broadway), and two laundry places, the Wash Stop...

and the Coin Laundry. Gotta love that font. Very Blaxploitation. As for Anakin's, I have a coupon for this place but I'm not sure if it's for the older location or this one. Either way, I'm going to use it once I go on break again. A few steps away from this was the Golden Hill Diner. I'm not sure when they repainted it, but it looks like there was a mega sale on GREEN PAINT. What gives.

The building is definitely circa 1930's, Art Deco/Streamline Moderne. You can tell by the rounded corners and the glass blocks.

In the same building as the diner is Krisp, a grocery store which was formerly Jaycee's Market. The old color of this building (at least circa 2013) was an offwhite.

At the far left (hard to see the signage) is Panchita's Bakery which we would stop by later before going home.

I've always loved the sign of the Turf Supper Club...made even more dramatic with the brilliant sky and fluffy clouds.

I had to get the plane flying over...

Across the street was Krakatoa, a coffee shop.

followed by Jaroco Market. We later saw the dude crossing the street at our lunch destination.

Whoever wrote out this sign has some spelling issues. Really now. SCLICES?   FOUTAIN?

My five year old nephew could probably spell that much better.

And here we were, at one of our favorite NY Style pizza joints in SD, Luigi.

So many good choices:

The guys working here are always so nice and friendly. I noticed they like to chat with their customers, especially their regulars.  We all got the 2 SCLICES special with a drink

Bert's White Girl and Leonardo:

The White Girl was chicken with a spicy buffalo ranch sauce and bacon. The Leonardo was mushroom, sausage and pesto.

My Crime Scene and Sportsbar;

I've had these before (after persuing my previous visits). The Crime Scene was sausage, ricotta and tomato The Sports Bar was sliced potatoes with bacon, cheese and green onion.

TC got two vegetarian choices.

I don't remember the specific names as listed on their menu, but you can easily tell what's on it by looking at it.

That buffalo ranch had a kick to it. I didn't really like it but Bert preferred it over his other slice.

They always have a great assemblage of flyers on their windows, advertising upcoming event and concerts.

Ooh, 80's Tribute bands!

Of course, it's MC's by Steve West, who used to do (or does he still do it? I'm out of the loop) Resurrection Weekends on 91X.

Back to Panchita's at that awful barf green building...

I got four items - here are the first three...

A pineapple pastry, a coconut frosted cookie (Bert's choice) and an oreja ("ear" or palmier)

The fourth item was a cream filled Churro (below).

The total for these four items was $3.70! Try buying ONE item for that price at a hipster bakery. The following photos were taken at home later that day...

Their oreja was just as good as I remembered it. Very flaky and buttery with nice caramelized edges encrusted with sugar.

Coco cookie (Bert loved the glaze):

Pastry with pina (pineapple)

Our Anti-Black Friday agenda had Normal Heights next...

We took the scenic route...

Previous visit to Pizzeria Luigi:
June 2014 when I took TC and her friend Sherlock out to lunch during summer break

Previous visit to Panchita's:
December 2013

We would take the "long way" to get to Adams, via 30th St, going through Golden Hill, South Park, and North Park before arriving in Normal Heights...
