The First Avenue Bridge

Right after our "walk" across the Quince Street bridge, this next one was on our list...

In fact, while on the previous bridge, we saw this yellow bridge from afar, on the western edge of Maple Canyon. A fire engine had raced over it, catching our attention and when we saw another bridge there, we wanted to find it....

It turns out that the bridge was also on the list I printed from the web, the First Avenue Bridge. From what I've read, this is a rare example of a steel arch bridge in San Diego.

It was built in 1931 and was originally known as "The People's Bridge".

Even though the sky the a bit hazy, we still had a clear view of San Diego Bay, Coronado and Point Loma.

From this view, you can barely make out the Quince Street Bridge in the upper left corner. Below is Maple Canyon.

Using my trusty zoom for a closer look at the Quince Street Bridge.

Nice ironwork here. The color is also subtle but yet distinctive.

A side shot off the bridge plus a tree that fell.

There was also a home down IN the canyon. Hmmm, I wonder who lives there?!

The other end of the bridge had the same marker we saw earlier, but this was more weathered.

View from the north end on Palm.

Detail of the steel arches...

Even though this bridge wasn't a wooden trestle or swaying suspension bridge, it was still worth checking out since it's a part of early San Diego history.

Later that day we went to Fathom Bistro, a bait and tackle slash craft beer joint on the Shelter Island Pier (this was back in early Spring).

I hope you liked this mini bridge series, which can be read in this order

and this post.

We live in such a great city and it's always fun learning about all the landmarks and interesting places...
