New favorite soup

I finally did it...

I tried something NEW at Asia Cafe...haha!

It was about time to get out of my rut and try a new dish here...

One thing I noticed was their lack of napkin dispenser. I was just here a few weeks ago with my neighbor and after looking back at my old post, saw that it was missing as well. Perhaps they are being more parsimonious with their napkins because sometimes people take more than they should? Stealing napkins perhaps? Who knows. In any case, our utensils and napkins came in a small basket...

I think I shocked the younger son because we normally don't even have to look at the menu since we almost always order the same things (sticky rice, beef jerky, seen name toke, yum asia, and nem khao). This time, I told him I actually needed a few more minutes!  But first, our beverages - my iced coffee (which is quite strong, the way I like it; almost as strong as the one I had at Ha & VL in Portland) and TC's coconut juice with coconut meat.

I like that their menus haven't changed over the past seven years (at least when we first started going herem thanks to reading Kirk's blog).

I was especially curious about the menu items that DIDN'T have a description. There was one (not shown in the photo below) that I asked about and the son said, "Oh, you wouldn't like it!". When I asked what was in it, he said it was pig intestines. He was right on that one! I'm sorry but I'm not that adventurous, even for the blog. For the items listed under "pho" (even though what I ordered was not 'pho'), I asked about #25 and was told it was a soup with thin egg noodles, roasted pork and shrimp.

It sounded pretty good to me so I got that. TC was also in a soup mood, so she got pho with everything except the tripe.

I also caved after we got our soups and got an old favorite, the Nem Khao (Bert got to enjoy the leftovers later!)...

A quick maneuver with my chopsticks so you can see the noodles and the other good things floating in there. Along with roasted pork (char siu), there was one large shrimp, one piece of fake Krab, ground pork and a few slices of fish cake (which I really liked). They were generous with the pork slices too!

The meat in TC's pho was a bit on the thicker cut side. It was supposed to have the rare steak, flank and brisket in there, but there were some chunky pieces of something that she didn't like.

Here's my soup before I swirled around the noodles. It was very fragrant and quite filling! My soup had a little bit of everything in it.

I would definitely have this again next time. Along with Mi Quang soup from Mien Trung (and Ha & VL), this soup is now a new favorite! The noodles were thin, pliable, and had some "chew" to them. I like that better than mushy and soft noodles! Texture is a big thing for me. Anyways, it was a nice little early dinner for me and TC as we were out doing errands right after I got home.

I wished we had gone for dessert across the street at Neveria Tocumbo, but we were too stuffed for another bite. That ice cream stop will have to wait for another time!
