It's everything you wanted to know about why brussel sprouts make your farts smell so horridly! Let's not try to pretend we're all genteel and don't fart! This is educational and should be shared, ha ha!
If you would like to test this out, please feel free to try out this simple recipe for research...
This is pretty simple. Brussels sprouts, olive oil (my bottle had an oil spill awhile back), salt, and pepper.

Cut off the ends of the sprouts and get rid of any ugly leaves. Put them in a baking dish and drizzle olive oil, making sure to coat each piece lightly. Add your freshly cracked black pepper and sea salt.

Stick in in a preheated 400F oven for 350-40 minutes, making sure to stir them up halfway through cooking time.

Not much of a recipe since it's pretty simple. It's the same one I use for roasted other vegetables, but if you must know the source, it's one I used from the Food Network site by Ina Garten.
Bert and TC aren't big brussel sprouts fans, but they were willing to give this a try. I really liked the version I had at Soda & Swine, and it's a vegetable I hardly ever cook. I hated it as a kid but I like it (sparingly) as an adult.
Anyhow, yes....everything in that video is true!
These roasted brussel sprouts may taste good, but its noxious effects will be felt, or rather, inhaled with trepidation!
Please utilize open windows or air freshener after eating this dish, or you can totally be mean (and gross) to your loved ones and do The Dutch Oven, ha ha (not that I ever did, seriously)!

I've only recently come to appreciate brussel sprouts and that's ONLY b/c sis fell in love with it about a year ago! She loves going to Urban Plates b/c they make this bacon/cheese brussel sprouts that she LOVES. And she rarely cooks brussels but recently she's tried and loves it (not sure how her little kids feel about it but oh well). Your recipe looks great - will have to try it soon. And thanks for sharing that it gives you gas - I NEVER knew that! Will have to pass it along (excuse the pun here).
Well. I've roasted them your way as well as my way (cut in half and sauteed with bacon) and lately have peeled the sprouts and used the raw leaves in salads. There's a factoid I read (I think in one of those Dr. Oz books) that the average male expels gas (one end or the other) 17 times a day...and so does the average female.
hello faye - it's not a vegetable i eat too often, but i felt like making this recipe. brussel sprouts with bacon sounds good too.
hi cathy - it's not really "my way", more like the first recipe i found on the internet way, ha ha. but yeah, halving them would be better in the future as well as sauteed with bacon!
i believe that factoid!
Here's a link to my 'recipe'... http://mmm-yoso.typepad.com/mmmyoso/2008/11/easy-thanksgiving-dinner-side-dishes.html
I must say, we are roasting a lot more vegetables lately...sometimes topping with balsamic (one nice older lady friend told me to add vinegar to my diet; 'it clears up clogs in your veins just like it clears clogs in sinks'). I'm going to try your simple roast as soon as the next batch of Brussels sprouts shows up.
thanks for the link cathy!
roasting to me, seems more of a "fall" thing, but i like to roast vegetables no matter season anyways.
i've done this roast with potatoes (but I add paprika), as well as carrots and portobellos (but not all at once).
got the brussel sprouts at costco.
