Who cares if it was raining? We wanted burgers AND ice cream and nothing was going to change our minds about it...
Apparently,Eastwine has been around for quite some time, at least since the late 60's. It's a tiny eatery that's right next to Marine Park, next to the Bridge of the Gods.
When we walked in, a whole family was there waiting for their soft serve ice cream (we'll get to ours later), which Eastwind is famous for.
Their menu board - simple and straightforward. No gourmet stuff here. No brioche or pretzel bun, avocado or sprouts or Kobe beef here. Just your standard greasy spoon fare.
We sat at the counter and had a full view of the kitchen. There were only two guys working that afternoon.

and my plain Hamburger ($3.45). Condiments were off to the side. The buns were the kind you get at the grocery store. All burgers had shredded lettuce and a tomato slice. The patties were kind of like Weber's, with that chargrilled flavor, but nothing over the top spectacular. These burgers, though, hit the spot that late afternoon! Being out in the cold and rain really worked up our appetites.
Onion rings ($2.50) - This photo was taken after we had already eaten a few of them. As you can see, the batter wasn't the kind with crumbs, but with smooth batter. We were happy to eat something warm and fried.
Believe it or not, Bert and I didn't have too much room left for dessert. It would have been cool for each of us to have our own soft serve swirl ice cream cone but I just couldn't do it. Turns out that even their "small" size is pretty tall.
They use the Flavor Burst, a special machine that dispenses what concentrated flavor/color you want on your cone. According to the demo videos I saw on youtube, you can customize multiple flavors in your soft serve. I don't know if they did that here though. TC's flavor was blue raspberry. The family that was there before us had cones that were TWICE the height of hers! At least a foot high! WTH!
It was quite cool to see the machine in action. TC really enjoyed her cone and shared a tiny bit of it with us. It was funny walking out in the rain, shielding her with an umbrella so the ice cream wouldn't get wet!

They do not have a website. Are you not surprised? This place is in a major time warp, except for that newfangled ice cream dispenser.

It was time to head back to our suite to spend one last night in Portland. I remember we watched dvd's that night - it was one of the "Lord of the Rings" movies or "Free Willie 3 or 4" (the latter dvd was bought for $5 at the local Fred Meyer store). We should have brought the original "Star Wars" trilogy with us!

OMG is that a small cone?! I couldn't eat that much! But it looks really neat with that kind of ... blue veiny flavor burst thing all around it. The size kind of reminds me of the frozen yogurt that they serve at Rocky's next to K Sandwiches in Linda Vista.
Hi Mary, yeah dood, that's a SMALL! The people before us all had mediums and one guy had a LARGE! It was so tall! i couldn't imagine eating one of those by myself! sheesh!
The colors are pretty neat too.
