As I passed by this booth, the word 'Borek' caught my eye. I had to try at least one...
Turns out this booth is called Mr. Potato. It was run by a very friendly Turkish guy (he told me his name but for the life of me, I can't remember or even pronounce it properly).

Even though they are known for their "kumpir", a street food/snack, I wanted to try the borek.

Instead of one, I got 2, but he said, "Buy 3, get 1 free"!

He gave me one potato, one ground beef, one spinach, and another spinach but square shaped. The owner was quite amiable. He asked me where I was from and I told him San Diego, but I was of Filipino American descent and born here. His eyes lit up and he said, "Aaaah, Philippines and Turkey are friends!!! Our countries are friends!!!" He was also selling baklava (seen in the little white fluted cups) but I'll have to try that on another visit.

Here's 3/4 of the borek. This will be part of dinner for today and tomorrow.

I sampled the ground beef. The dough was a bit dry and so was the filling within. It seemed to thick to have been phyllo dough which is what I'm used to. Maybe it would have tasted better warmed up and with some sort of dip. I thought the bread or wrapper would be flakier. It's different than Bosnian borek. I didn't open up the spinach or potato but will post on that later once they're sampled.

On the other hand, the square shaped borek had a more crisp and flakier dough (phyllo, I believe). It was filled with feta cheese and spinach. I normally don't like feta anything, but when it's in a borek like this, it was pretty tasty.

Who else at at Mr. Potato?
Ian Pike of the SD Reader went here back in April and had the Kumpir (supposedly a popular street snack which is a baked potato that is split open and filled with all sorts of random toppings). Turns out Mr. Potato works rounds at various Farmer's Markets and street festivals.
There is no website for Mr. Potato.
There were many other food booths I saw today but since I was by myself, it would have been no fun to eat alone. I saw a booth that Bert had been to before, Bosnian Grill (they had Cevapi sausages!), a crepe booth, Filipino, Indian, Mexican, and a few more I can't recall. Next time!

I'm going to have to check out the Santee Farmers market today. It seems we get a random booth like this and three weeks later there is something new. (I'm talking to the French Crepe people in particular). This would be a nice variation to try.
is the crepe booth Bella's Crepes? I saw them at the market yesterday. Maybe Mr. Potato will be there at the Santee Farmer's market.
