Canada Trip - Day 5 Highlights

After our 8 hour trek from the Island to Ottawa, we spent the night at C's friend's home in the nation's capital. Their neighborhood is about a twenty minute walk away to Parliament Hill...

Of course, we didn't walk that day. The heat and humidity were oppressive.

We headed over to the city's oldest market...

Which was the Byward Market just steps away from Parliament Hill. We were lucky to get a space on the top floor of the parking structure.

They LOVE Obama here, ever since he visited several years ago (2009 I believe)...

One of Canada's best loved treats, the Nanaimo bar - a layered dessert bar that requires no baking!

Lovely fresh berries from the market, many with signs declaring, "fresh from my garden".

Canadians are also crazy about maple syrup:

Although we had one of these during our 2010 Canada trip, we just had to try it again here, Queues de Castor (aka "Beaver Tails")...Fried pastry dough = more fat on my @$$.

TC's sherbet from an ice cream stand.

Later on after dinner, C's friend's husband took Bert, myself and C's husband on a car tour of Ottawa and parts of Quebec. This is a view of Parliament Hill seen from the Quebec side (near the Museum of Civilization).

He also gave a tour of Embassy Row, the Prime Minister's residence (equivalent to our White House) and a few other important buildings that I can't remember.

This is the House of the Opposition (the party this is not in Power; currently the Conservatives are  in Power), whom he used to work for.

He also took us to this gigantor Asian store. C's husband (FarmerJohn) had a shopping list of Filipino food items he needed to get for C. Apparently, this store is a "destination" for busloads of Asian tourists.

It was a really cool day trying different food items from the market (we snacked here and there) and getting a crash course in Canadian politics...

Tomorrow, Quebec City!
