Canada Trip - Day 3 Highlights

Even while on vacation, I just HAD to consult Kirk's blog for a recipe...

Made, of course, with a few key changes...

C's dad is an avid fisherman. He was looking for a new recipe to try and I suggested "poke".

Behold, "Manitoulin style" poke - substitute ahi for fresh caught Rainbow Trout (the fish was pretty close to salmon in flavor and texture), no "ogo" (green seaweed salad) so he used cut up strips of nori. His trout was caught the evening before. No green onion or sesame seeds either, but he did marinate the salmon with garlic and ginger. He just added teriyaki sauce...

The verdict?  Awesome!!!!

And just so you know, Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the largest freshwater lake in the world (Lake Huron). There are many lakes and islands within the island as well.

A visit to the local big grocery store is always exciting....

Maple and bacon. Together. Forever. Like Rick Astley.

Followed by a visit to a local bakery for these...

Butter Tarts, a Canadian specialty.

A cute lighthouse in one of the small towns...

Lots of driving on country roads like this...

Trees and open land for miles and miles...

A visit to one of their "snack shacks": fried cheddar cubes and fried shrimp (ranch and sweet chili sauce)...

That day was also Father's Day...

We joined C and her husband and daughter along with C's parents (whom we are staying with) for dinner at a very nice restaurant near one of the island's southern bays.

If you look closely in the mist, you can see the ducks swimming in the bay...

More to come!  We experienced Ottawa today and will be heading over to Quebec City tomorrow!

It was soooooooooo good!!! When my Dad told her he had fresh trout, and CC said it had to be salmon, he informed us that trout is indeed a cousin of salmon. He was right! The flesh was pink, just like salmon!
