It was just us three and an opportunity for Bert to fire up the grill again...
Earlier that morning, I did errands and bought a few desserts from Sweet Sisters Bakery as well as making a stop at the new Fresh & Easy (on the corner of J Street and 3rd). While there, I picked up a few items for today's meal....

Hot dogs for lunch. These were the Colossal Franks (forgot the brand) but man, they were pretty BIG and THICK! Insert nasty joke here.

I also grabbed a can of chili which was ceremoniously microwaved. The chili was for Bert. Ugh, you can see the Target bag we used for trash in our sink! Better Homes and Gardens model kitchen this ain't.

TC decided to put some potato chips in her hot dog. Interesting this was. I'm sure it added a satisfying crunch. She also cut the dog in half since it was so thick. It's like twice the thickness of a regular hot dog.

We also grilled some corn, which was on sale at the store, 4 ears for $1.00.

Utilizing our lone source of child labor, TC shucked and de-silked (I made up a new word) the corn. Then she placed each ear on a square of foil, added a pat of butter, squeezed some fresh orange juice on it and sprinkled pico de gallo powder.

I suppose you could also use lime or lemon but we had oranges at hand (the bag was on sale for .70!).

Bert threw the foil packets on the grill and let it roast for about half an hour. Maybe it was less or more. I wasn't keeping track. We ended up having the corn an hour after we had the dogs. The corn came out pretty good - the butter was nice and melty and the pico powder gave it a nice kick. In fact, I added more powder with each bite. If I could change this up, I would have added the orange zest to give it a more intense citrus flavor.

We used our screw in corn holders. Heheh, sounds like "Cornholio"!

Mmmmm....I eat my corn rather messily while Bert eats his corn in nice and neat rows. Can you guess whose ear of corn this was?

Later on for dinner, Bert grilled some hamburger patties....
The fixings plate. None of this fancy cheese. Just Kraft singles please. Let's not be pretentious here with artisanal cheese.

The burger on a wheat bun...

I wasn't a fan of that bun - it was too "bready" and "oaty on top. We all loved the corn. I liked the burgers more than the dogs (which I thought were too salty)...

Dessert was bits and pieces of the stuff I bought from the bakery, plus ice cream...
Memorial Day means that summer is practically here! Hopefully we can do more grilling this summer and maybe even enjoy sitting out in our back yard!
