Canada Trip - Day 10 Highlights

This was to be our last full day before leaving at the ungodly hour of 2 am to get to the Sudbury Airport.

But first, breakfast!

Made by C's dad. He got this corned beef (with Chili) at an Asian store in Montreal. The meat are actual chunks not the smashed up block like Hereford's brand. He mixed it up with eight eggs and made a torta...

C picked us up later so we could go out and do some last minute food shopping. Of course, we stopped by that local bakery again for these homemade Butter Tarts...

I brought these back in plastic containers and they are now in our freezer!

More roads...this is all you see on the island. Unspoiled and undeveloped and no chains at all.

At the old fashioned candy shop next to the local chocolate factory, C insisted that I try this maple cone candy that she loved as a child. The owner said they just got a new shipment in because people were asking for it and that they go "really fast". Of course, I had to try this maple treat. What you can't see underneath that sugary crust is the gooey maple goodness inside!

Of of several new windmills on the island. Apparently some Island residents were against the idea of harnessing wind power for the island citing it's unsightliness and that it caused "illness". While we were on the road to Ottawa, we saw a big flatbed semi carrying ONE of the blades for a windmill like this.

One of the handmade beaded rings that C's student made; she is First Nation of the Ojibwa tribe. It's beautiful isn't it? Underneat are two beaded loops that form the "ring" that goes around your finger. The backing is leather. The white circle in the middle is shell.

Even though it rained early that morning, it had cleared up enough to visit one of the beaches...

Loved these beautiful flowers I saw growing on the sands of the beach.

There is a really long wooden boardwalk that spans almost half of the beach...

This is freshwater from Providence Bay in Lake Huron. See that black dot in the distance? That's TC! The water was very shallow and she was able to walk quite far without getting her head wet!

Many homes had these type of fences, cedar split rail. They are built in a "Snake Style" or zig zag fashion in order to withstand the winds and help keep in any animals (horses or cattle).

Garlic scapes from one of C's vegetable beds...

For "supper", I was recruited to make the pie crust for the "tourtiere" (traditional Canadian meat pie).

I thought these turned out pretty good...

The edges on my pie (the lower right corner) were not as pretty but hey, it's what's inside that counts right?

Now that I'm pretty much caught up with the Canada trip, the real job will be trying to dole out these posts in a timely (or not) fashion, while interspersing them with our Portland trip from this spring, and any other posts that pop up!

Hope you enjoyed the highlights. Can't wait to do the actual full on food porn posts for ya!
