Donut run to Mary's + food gifts!

Last night Bert and I had a few hours to spare while TC was at dance...

what better way to while away the time than to drive to Santee for some good ole donuts...

and of course, to meet up with Cathy and her Mister. They are fortunate enough to live five minutes away from this iconic donut institution.

On the top rack, blueberry donuts; one glazed and the other with white icing and blue sprinkles. I got the glazed since the other kind would be too sugary to me to handle...

A quick glance behind me showed these fun bobbleheads (Sherman and Mr. Peabody?)...I was surprised to see those last two. They were characters on the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon show. Apparently, there was an animated movie this past spring. Apparently no one saw it. Apparently someone mistakenly thought that they were still relevant. All kidding aside, it was pretty random to see this here.

The view from the back of the counter plus some just made donuts put aside on the back counter for the next morning. The man who fries the donuts (yes, crullers at 8 pm) was there...

Plus our gluttonous box - chocolate cruller, plain twist (for TC), bear claw, blueberry burrito (it turned out to be raspberry), maple bar, (partially hidden) apple fritter and one blueberry donut.

This thing was huge!  It was enjoyed with a cup of coffee...

In all of it's unhidden glory, the ginormous apple fritter. Loved the crisp edges, which I just picked at.

I ended up having only a few bites of this, the fritter, and the freshly made cruller. Fickle I was that night.


We were the lucky recipients of these food gifts from Cathy...

With the onset of fall approaching, pumpkin flavored everything is now on the market, much to the delight of my pumpkin loving foodblogger friends (Mary, Cathy and Kirbie). The pumpkin spice Milanos were quite interesting. I never would have thought of that combination.  From the bounty of their garden were homegrown tomatoes, both red and yellow. Cathy also gave us some Hatch chile flavored popcorn (which I had a bit of on the way home). It had a nice bit of heat to it, but not burning hot that I couldn't enjoy it.  Also included was a bottle of sake, the very same kind that Bert and I had the previous week at Gun Control, I mean Gunco Ramen.

The next morning, I made a recipe that I used to love as a child (and still do as an adult), sauteed onions with tomatoes and eggs (I didn't have fresh garlic so I used garlic powder which I insist that everyone should own).

This is quite easy...just saute one chopped onion in a few tablespoons of olive oil, then add the chopped tomatoes and let them cook down and soften. I used a red onion because I like the color and how sweet it gets once cooked. Then, add eight beaten eggs and stir until fully cooked.  This tasted so good that morning wrapped with flour tortillas. As a kid, we'd eat this with rice and Spam or Vienna sausage.  My mom would sometimes add ground beef to this.

Pour in those eggs man...

The garden fresh tomatoes were such a nice treat! Our tomato plants are pretty much dead but our calamansi tree, on the other hand, has been quite fruitful. We also have a bumper crop of oranges waiting to ripen. Can't wait to eat those!

As always, it was fun to meet up with Cathy in her 'hood. I ended up giving a few food gifts from our recent SF trip. Bert also got to lend a screwdriver to one of the ladies at Mary's who was trying to fix something. It was just something he happened to have in our car. Let's put it this way, our friends call Bert MacGuyver for a reason, haha.
