The papery garlic skins would sometimes flutter upwards from the truck.
We weren't sure what the debris was until we got closer and we could really see what was in those truck beds...
The sand colored hills were covered with dry grass, but from afar, it looked velvety in the light. Sometimes the hills would be dotted with roaming cattle...
See the traffic on the other side? That was about THREE MILES worth, maybe more! It was all uphill too. Sucks to be them. The opposite side of the freeway was closed down to one lane and yeah...it was quite backed up. I felt so sorry for the folks at the tail end of this mess.
After driving down the hill we passed by many signs advertising "Cherries" and "Garlic" and even "Garlic Ice Cream", we decided to stop at one of them. We happened to choose Mamy's Fruit Stand in what I thought was Gilroy, but in writing this post, found out it was actually the town of Hollister. The stand had it's own spacious dirt lot and a pen with several horses (a few mini and a couple full size). Fresh produce along with a wide assortment of dried fruits, nuts, honey, preserves, and of course, garlic were sold...
The ladies working here were so very nice and seemed happy to know that we were visiting from SoCal.
Before leaving, we took a look at the horses and saw that you could feed them alfalfa (just leave a "tip"). The larger horse was the most aggressive. It would push and nudge the smaller horses out of it's way and even stamped angrily at one. To get attention, the horses would stick their faces sideways through the fence slats and also strike the posts with their hooves to make noise!
Does that look like a caveman on the sign? WTH, but it was kind of funny seeing it.
Our Bing herries and package of dried mango (made with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives)...
We really liked these mangos which were a bit leathery but very intensely flavored. The cherries were also enjoyed over the next few days.
Who else went to Mamy's Fruit Stand?
I searched online and saw that Michelle Sun went here in 2008 and also fed the horses...
plus the reviews from you know where (gosh, only 4 reviews, really?)

I love that little black & white horse! Looks so cute. The stand also seemed to have a lot of stuff!
The poor little horse kept getting pushed aside by the bigger, more aggressive and greedy horse :(
