"The Secret World of Arrietty"

This past weekend, I took TC and her friend (the younger neighbor girl) to see the new Studio Ghibli film, "The Secret World of Arrietty"...

This was the Japanese remake of Mary Norton's classic children's book, "The Borrowers" which was first published in 1952 and later made into a made for TV movie in 1973 (which I vaguely remember)...

I remember reading the books as a child and enjoying the secret world of the tiny people who lived in human homes and "borrowed" things like sugar and cookies. According to what I've read, Hayao Miyazaki (head of Studio Ghibli) wanted to make "The Borrowers" into a movie for decades. The Japanese version came out two years ago to critical acclaim and blockbuster status and was just released in the U.S. with an international voice cast (most of them Disney actors in teen/tween shows).

The animation was amazing but then again, you'd expect nothing less from Studio Ghibli. Maybe not on the same scale as "Spirited Away" and "Castle in the Sky" but just as beautiful to see. There were parts of the movie where it was like looking at an impressionist painting. So many details and it made the viewer feel as though they were in the shoes of the Borrowers themselves.

Here's the cover of the original book:

And here's the trailer which pretty much tells the whole movie...

For a "G" rated movie, this was top notch. You'd normally never find me at G-rated kid flicks. Most of them would bore me to tears. The girls and I were entranced by the images we saw on screen. The story of the fiercely independent Arietty and her parents kept us interested throughout, especially when she was seen by The Boy (a young boy who was convalescing in the home they resided in)

Arietty's parents were voiced by real life married couple, Amy Poehler and Will Arnett. The main character was voiced by Bridget Mendler (one of the main stars of the show "Good Luck Charlie" which I haven't seen but TC watches occasionally), the boy by David Henrie (who plays the older brother of Selena Gomez in "Wizards of Waverly Place"). The wierd crazy old lady had Carol Burnett's voice and the "primitive" kid was Moises Arias (the irritating kid in "Hannah Montana"). Why do I know some of this shit? Remember, I have a younger daughter who watches some of the crap Disney spews out as entertainment. OMG, I had to sit through trailer after trailer of crappy mediocre flicks this will sully the screen this coming spring and summer. I don't even remember what they were but several were sequels.

Anyhow...what's a movie without popcorn right? Complete with "butter flavored" goo!

The girls also shared a blue raspberry Icee...

Up next...lunch!
