Return to Village House Kalina

After getting that humongoloid tray of baklava from King of Nablus Sweets, we headed over to La mesa where we had dinner here...

D never had Ukrainian/Russian food before and I definitely wanted to try the stroganoff this time...

Again, their menu...

This time we sat on the other side...

Housemade bread with cold herbed butter...

Borscht - Lots of flavor here! Loved the thick cut beets and the broth. I liked that it turned pink when the sour cream was mixed in. Cute plate that it was served on too!

I couldn't resist ordering the Pelmeni again - pork and beef, I believe. D really liked this. We saved a few for TC.

They had stroganoff that evening so we made sure orde that.  It was in a smaller dish than expected. We enjoyed the thin cut beef and the creamy sauce. Our only grip was that the serving size of the noodles (I wasn't expecting rotini) was too small for the two of us.

We also shared the Escalope (breaded pork chop). Of course, this was a lot of food for us two and we made out with mega leftovers that evening.

Speaking of gripes, I was a bit peeved because I wasn't able to use my coupon that evening. It was by
America's Daily Deals - kind of like a Groupon. This deal was $8 for $16 and to be used for dinner only. I bought two for myself. Even though I went here a week before, the coupon was not honored. The first time I used it, there was no problem. No questions. However, the girl who helped us (a different one from the previous week) said I wasn't "on the list".

Apparently, the restaurant seemed irritated by the fellow who runs this deal site and she complained that
"too many people" were using the coupons and getting "free food" and they couldn't run the restaurant and make money if too many people were using coupons. WTF.

Well, she also went on to say that the guy is supposed to supply them a list of names of people who bought the deal and they would double check it. Since I wasn't on the list, I couldn't use the coupon. I explained to her that I used my coupon the week before, etc. She said she couldn't accept it. At this point, I was like, whatever. Just give me the bill. But, I find it odd that the first time we used my coupon no list was brought out, no name checking was done. The coupon was accepted. The waitress said that if I dined here again, I could call ahead to see if I was on the list. Really? Seriously?

Despite this shittiness, we still enjoyed our food, but this really ticked me off. So, I don't even know if I want to go through this hassle again. I mean, a person could call and ask if they were on the list and they could always say, "No, you are not". Not to be miserly, but I may as well call it a loss. My friend D said I should contact the coupon site to let them know of this, but I haven't...I don't know if I want to use their deals again if the guy running it is that shady.

Anyhoo...still a good meal!
