"Rubio's debuts two new shrimp tacos" (Yes, this was an actual article!)
But the burning question is, "Were they any good?"
Got these coupons in the mail since I joined Rubio's "Beach Club" last year for the sole purpose of getting a free birthday meal along with deals on new items and other freebies. According to the article, Rubio's is trying to revamp it's menu with different flavor combinatios and trying to remain relevant in the fast food world. These new menu items are part of this new trend.
Since Lent just started this week, we are having Seafood on Fridays...

This was my entree - The Salsa Verde Pan Seared Shrimp Taco plate which you can get with rice and beans (or chips).

The creamy sauce tempered the heat of the green chile sauce while the avocado provided some smooth texture. There wer e about three or four shrimp in each taco. They are supposed to be served in just flour tortillas but when the girl asked me which kind I wanted, I wavered so she said she could give me one of each. In retrospect, I would go for the corn since the flour tortillas tasted really "thick" and flavorless. The shrimp was really good but I would have liked more shredded cabbage in here. I ended up putting some chopped onions and cilantro from the salsa bar to give this more flavor.

Now this was also a separate coupon deal on another new taco that debuted a couple of months ago, the Avocado Corn Fish Taco, which we had last month at the new food court in UTC.

TC really liked ours last time, so she used the coupon for this instead of the Sesame Soy Fish Taco (another new creation). I remember liking this as well.
Bert had the Smoky Red Chile Hand Battered Shrimp plate with chips and beans.

Bert and I had one of each and I have to say that I liked his much much better. First of all, his had battered shrimp and it had much more flavor than mine did. Both of the tortillas were also corn which taste better than the flour.

I liked the sauce on this better than the one in my entree. For the price of these entrees ($1.00 off 8.50/7.59 respectively), I think Rubio's should throw in either a salad or a drink. But then, that's just scroogy me talking aloud. I'm glad Rubio's is thinking of different ways to get people into their doors. Of course they will always have their original fish taco on hand, but I agree that it's good to change up the menu once in awhile and offer some new flavors.
In case you're wondering, we took the food to go. It was mega crowded in there and I didn't want to eat in a noisy atmosphere, so home we went so we could enjoy these on nice plates instead of the containers. I also have fun using fake names whenever I place an order at Rubio's. My name is hard for some people to pronounce and it's a pain to spell it, inevitably to have it pronounced incorrectly as well as spelled wrong on the receipt itself. I used my real name tonight and once again, my name was mangled beyond recognition (pulls out hair and screams).

I understand about the fake name, I do the same! You'd think an American name like Vicki would be easy, but I always end up getting called Nicki, or even Figgy! So my "Starbucks name" is Rachel :)
haha, yay! someone else who does the fake name thing!
A friend of mine and I used to give fake names too whenever we went out to lunch together.
I have a couple of coupons too that I need to use to try the new shrimp tacos. They look really good.
haha - another one who does the fake name thing!
I do love Lent, even though I eat fish on Friday all year (just in case). The offerings from restaurants to have everyone eat there during Lent (2 for $4 fish sandwiches at Arby's and Burger King?)are always interesting.
Of course I have a Starbucks name. It's fun. Kind of like Over The Line names.
hi cathy - yay, another kindred spirit! fake names rule! i haven't used a "racy" over the line type name though. just easy to pronounce names...some of the names I use are Hispanic as well. hey, i live in Chula Vista...
we are trying to eat more fish, Lent or not.
