Last year it was Korean bbq and this year it was seafood...
He wanted a place neither of us had been to before and after searching a few of my friend's blogs, came upon the Pacific Beach Fish Shop. You can't miss it because there's a giant marlin hanging in front of it.

You go in, place your order and your food is brought out to you. You pick your seafood (fish or shrimp), the manner of cooking (fried, grilled), the style of your food (taco, sandwich, salad) and the type of seasoning.

More sauces and condiments on our table outside...

The whole shebang - we definitely had leftovers that day!

Bert's grilled swordfish with a side of steamed vegetables and seaweed salad (seen above in the green cup and man, it was a pretty large portion too). He really liked this preparation; it was meat, seasoned well and not dry at all.

TC's Alaskan cod fish and chips. While the fries weren't that great, the beer battered cod was quite tasty! These were substantial meaty pieces which flaked nicely.

Based on Kirbie's recommendation on her blog, I tried the TKO Taco which bills itself as the "best" fish taco in San Diego. The salsa was fruity, which was a nice change. The fish seasoning had a good flavor to it but I didn't quite agree that it was the best. They gave me a corn tortilla (I forgot I could have requested flour) which I ended up ditching and just ate the tasty filling.

I also ordered the Chipotle glazed shrimp (they're underneath all that) which I liked better than the fish taco. There's something about shrimp that I really enjoy. I just wish they had more shrimp than all those shredded toppings though.

A cross section of the lobster lumpia and the beer battered cod. The lumpia was an afterthought and also because I was curious to try this. It was pretty good and could have been a meal in itself since it was served with jasmine rice. The lumpias were cut on the bias, which looked more attractive I suppose.

This was a bit of a "splurge" meal which became two since our leftovers were essentially our dinner that same evening. Everything we had was pretty good but I was underwhelmed by the TKO taco.
Heading west on Garnet, we went to Pure Cupcakes to pick up Bert's dessert...

He was looking specifically for German chocolate but they didn't have any that day since they rotate their flavors. Instead, he chose one called the "Rol-E-Ol-Ee-oh", which was a dark chocolate cupcake with caramel buttercream that is dipped in dark chocolate. TC and I chose minis (one blueberry and the other chocolate raspberry).

The cupcakes were saved for the next day, which was Bert's actual birthday. I made him his special request meal, spaghetti with ground turkey (no photo of that but I'm sure you can just picture it in your minds)...

Yes....

This was a really good choice and our mini's were the perfect size to enjoy just a small taste.
Who else went to the Pacific Beach Fish Shop?
It was Kirbie's post from earlier this year that prompted us to give this place a try...

We haven't been to PB in the longest time! We're considering the PB restaurant walk next week which may change that fact!
Minis are my favorite size and better for your waistline! I like that Bert is happy with good 'o turkey spaghetti. I pretty much only use ground turkey instead of beef, so hubby has no say in the matter! He, on the other hand, handles his choice of yummy meats on the grill. :)
Hello Lynn, yeah, I usually don't like going to PB because of the parking but this fish shop has their own lot, which is great.
I'm glad that my husband isn't really into fancy stuff. We'd go broke if we ate at high end restaurants, haha. I like cooking for him and homemade is always better. :)
I keep meaning to go here. Jake plays softball on Sundays and we pass by it and I always think, "Man, we should go there" haha. Too bad you can't see the shrimp in that one, shrimp is my favorite!
That cupcake that Bert picked out looks so good with that caramel! Yum! Happy happy birthday to Mr. Bert!
hi mary - it's worth at least one visit. thanks for Bert's bday wishes too! :)
