Le Normandie

Dinner was at one of their favorite spots in Pacific Grove. It was housed in this big building complex that sold antiques.
On the bottom floor of the Holman building was Le Normandie, a French restaurant owned by a French couple.
The wife was working the floor. Her husband was in the back cooking.

Live entertainment was provided by this guitarist.

Um, "Request please? "Seek and Destroy" by Metallica?"

"No? How about "Symphony of Destruction" by Megadeth?"

Actually, the guy was pretty good. He did a lot of bossa nova stuff and Beatles. We were playing "Name That Tune" at our table, ha ha.

According to my godparents, this was more of the local's place to eat with very few tourists since it was off the beaten path.

The handwritten menu changes daily. There was a good special going on - $18.95 for soup or salad, an entree and a glass of house wine.

Our bread...

Our wine. Actually TC's meal came with wine, but since she's only 10, I asked to have the white wine in her place since my meal (which wasn't a special) didn't come with wine. I don't remember what kind this way (a Chardonnay maybe)...

Bert's French Onion Soup...Okay, gross story at the end! Wait for it!

TC's Caesar Salad:

My Ninang's Pork Tenderloin in Normandie Sauce (whatever that is). Almost all of our meals came with sides of roasted fingerling potatoes, green beans, asparagus, and carrots, which were artfully arranged.

TC's Vegetarian Linguine...

Bert got the Half Chicken. There was no way he could eat all THAT!

This was not one of the specials but I wanted salmon more than the other choices. My Ninong also got this - The Salmon Fillet with Tarragon sauce. Loved the seasoning on this as well as the sauce but the portion was more than what I was used to eating. I liked how they divided the vegetables.

My godparents' raspberry tart...

TC's housemade raspberry sorbet:

This reminds me of an old fashioned street - Shops on both sides and parking in the middle...

Sunset in Pebble Beach...

All right, it's Gross Story Time.

Well, remember that nice looking French Onion Soup Bert had? On a whim, I decided to try a tiny spoon and have TC taste it as well. I used my spoon to cut a piece of the top layer of cheese and let the soup slowly seep into the spoon's curved space. After blowing on it to cool it down for TC, I handed her the spoon so she could have a taste. There was a long hesitation as she scrutinized the spoon. Finally she whispered, "What's that Mommy?".  Upon closer inspection, it looked like it was a hair.

I put the spoon on my bread plate and hit it behind my water glass so my godparents couldn't see me "dissecting" the cheese. While doing so, my fears were confirmed. Not only was it a hair, but it was a dark and CURLY hair. Well, I'm hoping it wasn't a fucking PUBE but man, even if it was a strand of hair from the chef's head or arm, that still would have been just as disgusting. By this time, my godparents were wondering what I was doing but I played it off as saying, "Oh, she thought she saw something in the soup but it's nothing...". I don't know if they believed me though.

During this whole time, I was also trying to be discreet because we were here as guests of my godparents and this was a favorite spot of theirs. I didn't want to embarass them or for them to be embarassed that they took us to this fancy place and it turned out to be unsanitary! I also had a hard time trying to "warn" Bert from not eating the soup. It was too problematic to even tell him since we were sitting right in front of my godparents. It's not like I could whisper, "Heyyyyy, don't eat that soup unless you want to choke on a hairball!",  so unfortunately Bert finished eating his hair soup french onion soup. I had to tell him after dinner. I really wanted to save that hair and show it to the owner (who also served double duty as our server) but again, didn't want to cause a scene.

SHUDDER!!!!!! Ewwww!

I couldn't find any blogger's posts on this place and they don't have a website, so here are some reviews:
Monterey County Weekly (May 13, 2010)and yelp

Have you guys ever found a hair (or worse) in your food while dining out? If so, what did you do about it? Inquiring minds (my own) want to know!

Wow, who ever hand writes that menu is French. I had a French penpal in high school and their handwriting all look like that.

Ewww, just the thought of hair in my food grosses me out, even if it was my own.

i didn't know there was a style of french penmanship! :) but i know what you mean. it seems like allof the older filipinos (my parents age) have the same type of writing.
