BBQ Crawl - Stop 4: Huffman's

[Update - Closed as of early 2012. Bummer...]

Believe it or not, we went to one last place. So we were supposed to go here after Barnes but we knew that this place did NOT have a public bathroom so we opted to go to The Barbecue Pit first. Located right off the 805 and Imperial Ave exit just past Lincoln High in a tiny strip mall which is named after the late Mr. Huffman himself, The Brooks Huffman Plaza. Although he passed away eleven years ago, his widow still runs the restaurant that bears his name, which is next to Valencia Market, a small liquor store.

The interior is pretty spartan but fairly clean. If I had more room, I would have wanted to try the fried gizzards and the fried okra. No, most of us were here for dessert.  See the warmer? The pies are in there (peach cobbler, pecan, and sweet potato). The lady at the counter asked me if I wanted my pie warmed up or cold. I asked for it warmed and took another to go for Bert.

That must be a vintage sign. Look at those prices!

I remember seeing the old commercials of Huffman's BBQ featuring Mr. Huffman. They would be on late at night - he seemed like a really charismatic man. I tried looking for it on YouTube to no avail. Those commericals were legendary! HotFudge, if you're reading this, you know what I'm talkin' about!

There were many photos of Mr. Huffman with famous (and local) celebrities. This one was with the Rev. Jesse Jackson. There was another with former L.A. Mayor Tom Bradley, as well as Muhammad Ali. Sadly, those were the only public figures I recognized on the walls.

Sorry, but my peach cobbler is so ugly. I didn't realize it would be placed in a styrofoam container. I was asked if I wanted it warmed or cold. A few others had theirs "cold" or "as is" and the pies were in tins. I think Bert would have enjoyed this more because he likes warm desserts more than I do. The pie crust was too soggy because it was warmed up and dumped into this container. I guess I was expecting it to be on a plate.

C's pecan and sweet potato pies with my peach cobbler. I had a tiny bit of her sweet potato pie and liked it. It was fluffy and sweet but not overly sweet.

I got a pecan pie to go (in a tin) for Bert...I had most of it the next day for breakfast. I wished there were more pecans in it instead of just on the top. I really liked the crust too. It reminded me of a giant pecan tart. Loved it.

We sat by the far wall next to the the Huffman wall photos...

A couple of places across the street. Dennis and I were admiring the font for "Hong Kong" Chinese Food. Ha ha, remember the cartoon, "Hong Kong Phooey"? (Number one superguy!)

Who else at at Huffman's?
I found this old post from Kirk (July 2006) - he and his wife tried a wide variety of menu items!
SD Reader (December 28, 2000) - "Voted the Best Smothered Chicken"

Here is a really nice article about Brooks Huffman's bid to get Christmas lights on the Southeastern SD freeway overpasses.

For way better pictures of the pie (and one of the toys from Dennis), check out Kirbie's post.

And once again for those who may have missed the previous BBQ Crawl posts, here is C's all inclusive post of Stops 2-4 as well as Mary's round up as well as Leanne's!

There is no website for Huffman's.

As always, the polarizing reviews on yelp taken with a grain of salt (some of them are quite entertaining to read while a few were condescending).

In all, a very fun day packed with amazing food (ribs, brisket and pie) and sights to see! It was a great meetup and getting to know our fellow bloggers a little more through this crawl. Even (selectively) notoriously anti-social me had a fun time! I'm definitely coming back to all of these places to try the other menu items...

Those of you that went? Which was your favorite and why? For me, the hands down winner was Coop's. No contest.

Coop's hands down! But I love BBQ Pit for their old school atmosphere.

Coop's was, by far, my favorite bbq of the day. I think I'd like to go back to Huffman's, though, and try their smothered chicken. And fried okra.

And, I'd probably go back to Barnes just to explore their 99 cent menu.

But for bbq? We're totally going back to Coop's.

Def Coop's. I think it ruined us for all the other spots. FH has been talking about going back to Coop's all weekend.

Yeah! Coops! We started off with the best!

Coop's hands down. Their BBQ is the way I like to make my BBQ. And I love how they smoke their sauce in the actual smoker (none of that liquid smoke stuff).

The Mister loved the pecan pie from Huffman's. Now I'm going to have to make a pecan pie for him.

hi c - liquid smoke is gross! it has an acrid taste to it, yuck.

i like making pecan pies during the holidays (pre-made crust though). i liked huffman's pecan pie much better than that peach cobbler slop.

Yeah, agreed with everyone else on Coop's. I did love the pecan pie at Huffman's, though. The "goo" part of the pie was actually full of flavor and not just sweet and slimy as it can be with some other pecan pies.

hi m- yes, that pecan pie filling from huffman's was quite good.

well, the majority has spoken - coop's kicked @$$!!!!!
