After all, it's no fun celebrating a birthday alone, right. So we began the day here...
at Project Reo Collective (PRC). I had a free dulce de canela atte birthday offer but also, we were there to check out the newest exhibit based on a Mexican card game, "The Loteria", in which 54 local artists were given a card from the Loteria deck. The game is much like Bingo, but it uses images on the deck of cards instead of numbers.

The show is up for the whole month of April and I highly recommend checking out the exhibit in person.

Each artist brought their own twist to the cards...

This was a different take on "El Borracho" ("The Drunk"); he's normally pictured stumbling, holding a bottle. Here, he is IN a glass of tequila and holding the worm!

This one caught my eye..."Ang estrelya", which in Filipino, means, "The Star". The word star in Spanish is "estrella" (pronounced "ES-tray-UH); in Filipino the double "LL" in Spanish is pronounced differently, so "estrella" becomes "estrelya". Another example would be the last name Castillo, which Filipinos pronounce as "Cas-TEEL-yo"; the word "pastilla" as "Pahs-TEEL-ya", etc.

The image of the star is also the "parol", a star shaped lantern most often seen during Christmas time. It symbolizes the star that brought the Three Kings to Jesus Christ. Traditionaly the star shaped parol has a bamboo frame and is covered with Japanese tissue paper. More modern versions are made with a heavier wire frame and covered with translucent capiz shell. If you are ever in Seafood City during the Christmas season, they sell these. I've posted many times on the PASACAT Parol Festival in the past. Anyhow, I really loved this artists interpretation of The Star card.
Something new I noticed was a new bench where their sugars, stirrers, and napkins used to be. They even had branded pillows too!

Our first coffee of the day...my dulce de canela latte and a Mexican mocha. They only do paper cups here plus no latte art. Both coffees were ok; we made sure to have the milks subbed for us. Lactose is not our friend anymore.

The folks working here are always so nice, as well as the customers. Everyone has always been friendly. It's great to support a community run and owned business.

"St. Patrick's Day - Coffee + art exhibit, breakfast, throwback cap design + capirotada" March 2018
I had pondered where to go for breakfast for the past several days. Should we use a birthday offer or try something new? After much deliberation with Bert and narrowing it down to the places where we'd be near, Idecided on something new to both of us. That post next.
