Portland Day 2 - Council Crest Park

Every guide to Portland mentions this park...

located in one of the highest points in the Tualatin mountains...

Council Crest Park isn't that far from downtown Portland; it's just maybe ten minutes away from our hotel. As we drove up the hill, TC and I got excited because there was a light dusting of snow on the hills...

I know it's not much but for us season-less SoCal folks, this was a big deal, ha ha.

There was hardly anyone at the park this early in the morning which made for easy parking.

Initially, I could see some light flurries falling from the sky. It dawned on me that it was snow!  It was pretty cold that morning as you can imagine. I'm sure this was shorts and flip flops weather for some folks but for us, at least it wasn't freezing cold.

Council Crest Park is one of the highest points in Portland and on clear days, you can see five different points of the Cascade mountain range including Mount Rainier, Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson. In the early 1900's the park was the site of an amusement park complete with a ferris wheel and observational tower, which has since been replaced with a steel water storage tower. There was also a trolley line that serviced this area. Must have been pretty cool taking a streetcar up here with the beautiful views.

Mount Hood is hiding behind those clouds.

Yeah...they're there all right, but hidden.

You can see downtown from here.

NOT a Benson bubbler water fountain. The original bubblers are of the four bowl design and located mostly in downtwon.

We loved seeing the snow but being cold? Not so much.

Here's what the park looks like on a better day:

Cool time lapse video!

Like I mentioned in my Joseph Wood Hill Park post, the views of Portland from this park would have been so much nicer on a clearer day.  We were still happy to have come here on a day with snow (as little as there was). It's such a rarity for us and it looked so pretty..

Meanwhile, downtown Portland was gearing up for what would be a really huge nationwide event with demonstrations happening all over the U.S. We would be checking out the #MarchforOurLives event this same morning...
