The Brazilian Guys

My birthday was on a Friday...

and this breakfast place in Mission Hills was only open on weekdays...

We wanted to try this place out since we both had never been.  The Brazilian Guys shares space with Cake, a bakery.  There is a lovely side patio  and a few larger tables inside. We chose to stay outside so we could enjoy the fresh air.

The young men working here are so very nice. Their cartoon logo does look like them too!  I had our cooler ready, anticipating leftovers. We had to pace ourseves, ha ha. We chose their well known stuffed hashbrowns (apparently a Brazilian thing?) with chorizo and a tapioca crepe along with Brazilian cheese bread.

Our breakfast, which was brought out to us (great service here).

The pao de quiejo, made with tapioca flour and served with your choice of a sauce. We chose sour cream (not a sauce, I know). The red sauce in the other dish was actually for our breakfast entrees. These were so delicious served warm. They had a slighty crisp exterior giving way to a slightly chewy interior.  I didn't like how the sour cream looked though. It wasn't a dollop or a spoonful, but more like squeezed from a bottle.  Kind of wormy.  But I'm not complaining too much because man it tasted good!

Both of our entrees came with a side of our choice. The co-owner suggested their avocado salad so I agreed. I didn't realize we would both get it. Had I known, one of us would have ordered something else for variety's sake.  That being said, this was one of the best salads we've had. The tomatoes were so fresh and the avocados perfectly ripe and creamy. Whatever sauce they used was also delicious. I was afraid it would have vinegar or something but thankfully there wasn't any vinegar in here. I chose chorizo as my filling. You can also choose what type of hashbrown you want; in my case it was regular potato.

As you can see, the hashbrown was quite large. It was formed in a cast iron mold. This was a heavy meal. I only finished less than half. The rest would be leftovers.  The hashbrown exterior was crisp but not crispy. The chorizo and cheese were flavorful as well.

Bert got the tapioca crepe with chicken and cheese.  The crepe had a really interesting texture. It wasn't really crisp. The chicken inside started getting tough after the dish cooled down.  Their BG sauce (short for "Brazilian Guys) was also quite good. Not too spicy but definitely with a little kick!

Glad we tried this place!  Obrigado Brazilian Guys!

Here's a video from one of the local Farmer's Markets (where the BG's go on the weekends); it shows them making a stuffed hashbrown:

Not too far away was a "hidden gem" in San Diego that we just had to see...
